Background: Metabolic and bariatric surgery is a safe and effective treatment strategy for severe childhood obesity, affecting 10% of US adolescents.

Objectives: This prospective observational study addresses knowledge gaps related to changes in weight, cardiometabolic risk, and weight-related quality of life (WRQOL) in adolescents 10 years after laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (LAGB) insertion.

Setting: Five Teen-Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery (Teen-LABS) US centers.

The prevalence of severe obesity among adolescents continues to be a significant global concern. Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) has increasingly shown to produce safe, efficacious, and durable effects on weight loss and related physical health complications, and evidence of psychosocial outcomes are beginning to mature. The revised American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery pediatric guidelines published in 2018 reported emergent data regarding key psychosocial outcomes, including mental health, disordered eating, and quality of life, although data were limited by small, short-term studies and often without comparison groups.

Objective: To identify factors associated with incident alcohol consumption, hazardous drinking, alcohol-related problems, and substance use up to 8 years following metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) during adolescence.

Background: In this cohort, nearly half of those who underwent MBS as adolescents screened positive for alcohol use disorder, symptoms of alcohol-related harm, or alcohol-related problems within 8 years post-surgery. Moreover, persistent or heavy marijuana use following MBS during adolescence is higher than national data.

Article Synopsis
  • KMT2C and KMT2D are important enzymes that modify genes, with KMT2C haploinsufficiency recently linked to Kleefstra syndrome 2, a neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) with unknown clinical details.
  • A study involving 98 individuals found that most pathogenic variants in KMT2C span nearly all its exons, making variant interpretation difficult; the study also established a KMT2C DNA methylation signature for better classification of the disorder.
  • Key features of KMT2C-related NDD include developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, and distinct facial characteristics, setting it apart from similar conditions like Kleefstra and Kabuki syndromes, indicating the need for its renaming and

Objective: The purpose of this project was to develop a novel airway-exchange broncholaryngoscope (AEBLScope) to improve the efficiency and accuracy of airway-exchange procedures.

Methods: The AEBLScope was designed to combine a bronchoscope and airway-exchange catheter (AEC) into a single device and to reduce the blind placement of AECs. The prototype was constructed by modifying an existing distal-chip bronchoscope.
