Clinical (Chvostek symptom and Trousseau-Bonsdorf test) and electromyographical investigations of the neuromuscular excitability were performed in patients with different forms of epilepsy. Ionized Ca, Na, K, Cl, and total Mg were measured in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Seventy-five percent of the patients showed clinical and electromyographic signs of the tetanic syndrome.

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were studied in the state of wakefulness and in different phases of night sleep in healthy people and in epileptics. In the slow sleep the latencies of SEP components became longer, beginning from the P44. In the rapid sleep, increase of asymmetry of early components and sharp decrease of the amplitude of late SEP components take place.

The effect of 24-hour sleep deprivation (SD) on a number of electrophysiological indices in epilepsy and syncope was studied. Specific electroencephalographic manifestations were shown to be markedly activated which is important for the differential diagnosis of epilepsy and syncope. Following SD, patients with primary generalized epilepsy exhibited an increased spectral power of the 0- and alpha-rhythms and an elevated amplitude of visual evoked potential components (beginning with the H2 component), whereas patients with secondary generalized epilepsy had an enhanced amplitude of the late components of visual evoked potentials (P4, H4).

The qualitative and quantitative values of the baseline EEG differed significantly in patients with primarily generalized epilepsy and temporal epilepsy. The administration of anticonvulsants (phenobarbital, finlepsin) leads to a considerable clinical effect and a decrease in the values of the integrated EEG in the functional states studied in conscious subjects. Additional inclusion of sydnocarb into the multimodality treatment results in the intensification of the therapeutic response in patients with petit mal epilepsy which is accompanied by EEG desynchronization, whereas in temporal epilepsy with psychomotor paroxysms, sydnocarb addition produces an opposite effect.
