First-week survival and egg hatchability are lower in chicks from younger broiler breeder hen flocks. Creatine is a naturally occurring compound synthesised from the amino acid arginine or obtained from the diet and is important in the storage and transport of energy. Previous research found an improvement in the hatch rate but no posthatch performance improvements when fertile eggs from young breeder hens were injected with creatine monohydrate (CrM) on embryonic day 14.

Gastrointestinal dysbiosis is a disturbance in mucosal homeostasis, producing low-grade chronic intestinal inflammation and impaired intestinal barrier function. It is induced by several factors, including nutrition and stress, which are both significant factors when considering current broiler breeder practices. A great grandparent (GGP) chicken meat line was identified displaying clinical signs characteristic of potential dysbiosis, including wet droppings and litter, in addition to reduced reproductive performance when compared to a consistently high performing line.

In ovo corticosterone (CORT) exposure reportedly reduces growth and alters body composition traits in meat-type chickens. However, the mechanisms governing alterations in growth and body composition remain unclear but could involve myogenic stem cell commitment, and/or the presence of yolk steroid hormones. This study investigated whether in ovo CORT exposure influenced yolk steroid hormone content, as well as embryonic myogenic development in meat-type chickens.

Younger broiler breeder flocks produce smaller eggs containing smaller yolks, with potentially lower energy reserves for the developing chick. Creatine is a naturally occurring energy source and is abundant in metabolically active tissues; providing this to chicks in ovo should provide additional energy to improve hatchability and post-hatch growth. Thus, post-hatch performance of male and female chicks hatched from younger breeder flocks supplemented with creatine monohydrate (CrM) in ovo was investigated.
