Background: Systemic stress, inflammation, and hydroelectrolytic and acid‒base abnormalities observed during diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) can cause changes in the heart and even induce cardiovascular damage. We aimed to evaluate the structure and function of the heart during and after a DKA episode via echocardiography and biomarker assessment.

Methods: We performed a transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) in subjects with an episode of DKA in the first 4-6 h of treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • Pleural effusion (PE) is commonly found in patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF), but its effect on quality of life (QoL) is not well understood.
  • This study aimed to see if the presence of PE, detected by thoracic ultrasound (TUS), impacts the QoL of ADHF patients with a reduced ejection fraction (≤40%).
  • Results showed that patients with PE had significantly worse QoL scores (average of 40) compared to those without PE (average of 12), suggesting a strong link between the amount of pleural fluid and poorer QoL perceptions.

Detergents are highly produced pollutants with environmental problems like foam generation and toxic effects in biota. Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) are efficient, economical, and versatile surfactants, used in detergents for more than 40 years due to their detergency capacity. In the environment, NPE biodegrades into the metabolite nonylphenol (NP), classified as an endocrine disruptor.

Treatment for heart failure has experienced a major revolution in recent years, and current evidence shows that a combination of four medications (angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitors + β-blockers + mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists + sodium.glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors) offer the greatest benefit to our patients with significant reductions in cardiovascular mortality, heart failure hospitalisations and all-cause mortality. Unfortunately, despite their proven benefits, the implementation of these therapies is still low.
