MXene, a new 2D transition metal carbide-based material, is gaining outstanding attention in recent days in the area of separation and purification. In this study, we have successfully synthesized vanadium-based MXene-VCT (where T represents functional groups such as -OH, O, and F) by etching an aluminum layer from VAlC. For the first time, a vanadium-based MXene-VCT -embedded mixed matrix membrane was fabricated and utilized for removal of hazardous dye and humic acid from wastewater.

Organic contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) occurring in industrial effluents can not only persist in wastewater but transform into more toxic and mobile, substituted heterocyclic products during treatment. Thus, predicting the occurrence of PACs and their heterocyclic derivatives (HPACs) in coking wastewater is of utmost importance to reduce the environmental risks in water bodies that receive industrial effluents. Although HPACs can be monitored through sampling and analysis, the characterisation techniques used in their analyses are costly and time-consuming.

In this work, the removal of NOM (natural organic matter) as represented by humic acid by means of electrospun nanofiber adsorptive membranes (ENAMs) is described. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was used for the preparation of ENAMs incorporating silica nanoparticles as adsorbents. The addition of silica to the polymer left visible changes on the structural morphology and fibers' properties of the membrane.

Ionic polymer nanoparticles (IPNs) were synthesized in one pot by quaternization precipitation polymerization (QPP) as a novel polymerization technique. QPP eliminated the usage of high-cost ionic monomers and reduced the number of steps for the preparation of IPN. The monomers 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and 4-vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) polymerized in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and underwent quaternization simultaneously, which yielded ionic poly(DMAEMA--VBC) nanoparticles in one step with the size of 50-80 nm without any stabilizer and catalyst.

We report the synthesis of HSO-modified biochars (SBCs) as solid-acid catalysts to activate HO at circumneutral pH under visible light radiation. Spent coffee grinds were pyrolyzed with TiO at 300, 500 and 600 °C followed by steeping in 5 M HSO and were used for the Fenton-like degradation of methyl orange (MO). The catalytic activity of SBC depended on the pyrolysis temperature and correlated well with the surface acidity and persistent free radical (PFR) concentration.
