A previous study (Grassi B, Gladden LB, Samaja M, Stary CM, and Hogan MC, J Appl Physiol 85: 1394-1403, 1998) showed that convective O(2) delivery to muscle did not limit O(2) uptake (VO(2)) on-kinetics during transitions from rest to contractions at approximately 60% of peak VO(2). The present study aimed to determine whether this finding is also true for transitions involving contractions of higher metabolic intensities. VO(2) on-kinetics were determined in isolated canine gastrocnemius muscles in situ (n = 5) during transitions from rest to 4 min of electrically stimulated isometric tetanic contractions corresponding to the muscle peak VO(2).

A patient with ovarian carcinoma was evaluated for skeletal metastasis with a routine whole body bone scan. Although no bone metastases were visualized, there was dramatic accumulation of tracer in the soft tissues of the abdomen. CT revealed calcifying soft tissue metastases on the liver surface, the bowel serosa, and in the pelvis corresponding to the abnormal areas of Tc-99m MDP uptake.

Localized recurrent gestational choriocarcinoma, evidenced by a rising level of the beta-subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin, can be difficult to localize for surgical resection. We describe a patient with a rising level of the beta-subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin after extensive therapy for choriocarcinoma in which gamma scanning of the distribution of an intravenously administered iodine 131-labeled monoclonal antibody preparation (5F9.3) allowed localization of a focus of recurrent choriocarcinoma in the lung.

We studied a panel of 21 human tumor and other cell lines, mainly of epithelial origin, for the expression of HLA-ABC antigens by an indirect radiobinding assay using monoclonal antibodies. Four of the lines, 2 choriocarcinomas, a breast tumor cell lin (MDA-MB-157), and a colon carcinoma (LoVo) showed no detectable reaction with the antibodies. The levels of binding in another breast tumor line (SkBr3) and a colon carcinoma line (LS174T) were much reduced.

Immunoprecipitation of [35S]methionine-labeled cell extracts and analysis by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed that cells from two human choriocarcinomas JaR and BeWo contained beta 2-microglobulin. The JaR cells, and one subline of BeWo, did not express surface HLA-A, -B, and -C (HLA-ABC) antigens, nor did JaR contain the antigens when cell-free extracts were measured in a sensitive radioimmunoassay. It may be concluded that the lack of expression of HLA-ABC antigens in choriocarcinoma (and in the trophoblast) is not a result of lack of beta 2-microglobulin, as is the case for the Burkitt's lymphoma cell line, Daudi.
