Background: Gestational Zika virus (ZIKV) infection is associated with the development of congenital Zika syndrome (CZS), which includes microcephaly and fetal demise. The magnitude and quality of orthoflavivirus-specific humoral immunity have been previously linked to the development of CZS. However, the role of ZIKV NS1-specific humoral immunity in mothers and children with prenatal ZIKV exposure and CZS remains undefined.

Background: Transorbital penetrating brain injury (PBI) accompanied by electrical injury is an extremely rare presentation. This type of traumatic injury has a unique set of diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to the potential multiple organ system involvement and severe neurological complications.

Observations: A 50-year-old male experienced a high-impact injury from a welding spike that penetrated the orbit just above the eyeball with a concurrent electrical injury; the electricity exited through the great toe.

Objective: Reports of pain clinical trials evaluating psychological treatments often lack sufficient details on the potential and actual harm resulting from intervention. We aimed to understand how frequent and intense treatment reactions, conceptualized as unwanted symptoms, were in three clinical trials of digital Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for adolescents with: (1) chronic primary pain, (2) sickle cell disease, and (3) chronic pancreatitis. We also aimed to understand any differences by demographic and clinical variables.

We characterized the longitudinal serum protein signatures of women 6 and 10 years after gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) to identify factors associated with the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) and prediabetes in this at-risk post-GDM population, aiming to discover potential biomarkers for early diagnosis and prevention of T2D. Our study identified 75 T2D-associated serum proteins and 23 prediabetes-associated proteins, some of which were validated in an independent T2D cohort. Machine learning (ML) performed on the longitudinal proteomics highlighted protein signatures associated with progression to post-GDM diabetes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the use of mixed-reality (MixR) technology for patient setup in breast and chest wall radiotherapy, comparing it to traditional 3-point alignment methods in a clinical trial.
  • In this trial involving 18 patients (10 for proton and 8 for photon therapy), alignment accuracy was measured using cone-beam CT imaging, with the MixR approach yielding similar accuracy to 3-point alignment.
  • The findings suggest that MixR is feasible and can achieve comparable accuracy and efficiency; however, further advancements in technology and understanding are needed to fully optimize its effectiveness.
