Length of time domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) spend smelling urine of gonadectomised and intact conspecifics.

Domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) use urine to communicate among themselves, however, it is unknown whether the gonadectomy (neutering or spaying) of a dog affects this communication in anyway. Urine samples from 10 intact and 10 gonadectomised, unfamiliar dogs were presented to 12 tester dogs to sniff under controlled conditions in a pilot study. The amount of time the tester dogs spent sniffing each sample was recorded.

Clinical biochemistry of pregnant and nursing mares.

Background: Pregnancy and lactation result in increased metabolic demands. Although homeostatic mechanisms function to keep substances in blood at relatively constant levels, some changes in the concentrations of routine clinical chemistry analytes are likely to occur.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine what physiological changes occur in serum clinical biochemistry analytes in pregnant and nursing mares, and to determine whether the changes were substantial enough to warrant separate reference intervals for pregnant or lactating horses.

High frequency of viral protein expression in human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1-infected peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

Most human T cell lymphotropic virus type (HTLV)-1-infected individuals mount a strong and persistently activated cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) response to the virus, which implies that there is abundant chronic transcription of HTLV-1 genes. On the other hand, several observations suggest that HTLV-1 might be latent in vivo and therefore not detectable by CTLs. To clarify these discrepancies, we quantified the frequency of provirus-positive peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) that were capable of expressing the HTLV-1 Tax protein, which is known to be the immunodominant target antigen recognized by HTLV-1-specific CTLs.

Trace mineral supplementation of yearling horses.

Thirty-three Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse yearlings were used in two experiments (18 in Exp. 1 and 15 in Exp. 2) to determine the influence of trace mineral (TM) supplementation on growth and bone mineral content in young growing horses from 340 to 452 d of age.

The mechanical properties of equine third metacarpals as affected by age.

Twenty-five pairs of equine third metacarpals (McIII) were collected from horses of varying breeds and ranging in age from 1 d to 27 yr. Standard three-point bending tests were performed on the McIII to obtain comparative data on breaking load (BL), breaking strength (BS), and elasticity (E). Broken bones were reassembled and 2-cm sections cut from the bone 1 cm below the nutrient foramen and at the site of the break.
