Deep neck infections and subsequent mediastinitis can occur as lethal complications after endotracheal intubation. A 53 year old female patient developed a neck abscess and mediastinitis due to esophageal perforation after endotracheal intubation. An ABR-based universal newborn hearing screening program has been established in Würzburg since August, 1997.
