Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative condition and the primary form of dementia among elderly people. The amyloidogenic hypothesis is the main theory that explains this phenomenon and describes the extracellular accumulation of amyloid beta (Aβ) peptides. Model organisms such as Drosophila melanogaster have been utilized to improve the understanding of this disease and its treatment.

Chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) is a widely accepted method for inducing depressive-like states in animal models. We decided to explore the effects of CUMS on the CantonS lineage of Drosophila melanogaster, which differs from the OregonR lineage in various ways. Additionally, we wanted to investigate the potential benefits of kefir in treating these chronically stressed flies, as previous research has shown promising results in using kefir components for depression treatment.

Gestational diabetes mellitus is a common medical complication during pregnancy. It creates a hyperglycemic environment and impacts offspring development, increasing the risk of long-term complications, including obesity, impaired glucose metabolism and cardiovascular disease. The impact of gestational diabetes on the prostates of adult offspring has already been described; however, it is not known whether these effects are due only to the maternal condition or whether the offspring develop them throughout life.

Article Synopsis
  • Embryonic development is vulnerable to stressors like oxidative stress, which can disrupt normal growth and viability in organisms.* -
  • In a study with Drosophila melanogaster larvae, exposure to a free radical generator (AAPH) during different larval stages led to lower hatching rates and increased oxidative damage, particularly affecting the gut.* -
  • Observations showed significant morphological changes and increased cell apoptosis, highlighting the detrimental effects of oxidative stress on animal development.*
