Data accumulated in scientific literature indicate that Parkinson's disease develops after infections caused by SARS-CoV-2, West Nile, Coxsackie, St. Louis viruses, Japanese encephalitis B, hepatitis B and C, influenza A, HIV, herpes viruses, flaviviruses. Neuroinvasive West Nile viruses and HIV activate expression of alpha-synuclein.

A hypothesis is presented according to which the activation of retroelements during aging, causing immune reactions in the human body, is a trigger for the development of osteoarthritis. Predisposition factors for this are polymorphisms associated with osteoarthritis, located in intronic and intergenic regions where transposable elements are localized. In inflamed joints, changes in the expression of many genes are determined, which may be due to pathological activation of retroelements that influence epigenetic dysregulation of the genome.

One of the directions in treatment of chemoresistant breast cancer (BC) may include new methods of activating the immune response against tumor cells. Clinically used checkpoint inhibition using antibodies to PD-1 and PD-L1 works in some patients, but the lack of biomarkers means number of respondents is low. The possibility of combining this method with chemotherapy is limited by an increased risk of toxic liver damage, development of immune-related pneumonitis, and thyroid dysfunction.

The review describes the hypothesis that the drivers of epigenetic regulation in memory formation are transposable elements that influence the expression of specific genes in the brain. The hypothesis is confirmed by research into transposon activation in neuronal stem cells during neuronal differentiation. These changes occur in the hippocampus dentate gyrus, where a pronounced activity of transposons and their insertion near neuron-specific genes have been detected.

Alzheimer's disease affects an average of 5 % of the population with a significant increase in prevalence with age, suggesting that the same mechanisms that underlie aging may influence this pathology. Investigation of these mechanisms is promising for effective methods of treatment and prevention of the disease. Possible participants in these mechanisms are transposons, which serve as drivers of epigenetic regulation, since they form species-specific distributions of non-coding RNA genes in genomes in evolution.
