Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), a neurotropic DNA virus, establishes latency in neural tissues, with reactivation causing severe consequences like encephalitis. Emerging evidence links HSV-1 infection to chronic neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases. Microglia, the central nervous system's (CNS) immune sentinels, express diverse receptors, including α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7 nAChRs), critical for immune regulation.

Article Synopsis
  • RPTECs are cells in the kidneys that can get hurt and we made two types from mice to study them better.
  • We tested how these cells react to two substances: one called AFB1 and another called CisPt, to see how they activate different genes.
  • The results showed that while one cell line responded a lot to AFB1, both cell lines reacted to CisPt in a way that helps us understand how kidneys can heal after being damaged.

Individuals infected by SARS-CoV-2 are at risk of developing neurological-related post-acute disorders. Disputed epidemiological data indicated nicotine may reduce the severity of infection. Here we find exposure to nicotine in drinking water does not alter the moribundity of hACE2 mice.

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most prevalent environmental heavy metal contaminants and is considered an endocrine disruptor and carcinogen. In women with uterine fibroids, there is a correlation between blood Cd levels and fibroid tumor size. In this study, fibroid cells were exposed to 10 µM CdCl for 6 months and a fast-growing Cd-Resistant Leiomyoma culture, termed CR-LM6, was recovered.
