Aims/hypothesis: Dietary patterns characterised by high intakes of vegetables may lower the risk of pre-eclampsia and premature birth in the general population. The effect of dietary patterns in women with type 1 diabetes, who have an increased risk of complications in pregnancy, is not known. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between dietary patterns and physical activity during pregnancy and maternal complications and birth outcomes in women with type 1 diabetes.

Food-grade titanium dioxide E171 was administered in feed to Sprague Dawley rats in an extended one-generation reproductive toxicity (EOGRT) study (OECD Test 443). The dosed diet (0, 100, 300, or 1000 mg/kg body weight/day) started 10 weeks before mating and continued throughout the study. After weaning, pups were allocated to Cohorts 1 A/1B (to assess reproductive toxicity), 2 A/2B (to assess developmental neurotoxicity), and 3 (to assess developmental immunotoxicity); in addition, Cohort 1B was mated to produce an F generation and satellite F animals were evaluated for colonic aberrant crypt foci (ACF).

Titanium dioxide is a ubiquitous white material found in a diverse range of products from foods to sunscreens, as a pigment and thickener, amongst other uses. Titanium dioxide has been considered no longer safe for use in foods (nano and microparticles of E171) by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) due to concerns over genotoxicity. There are however, conflicting opinions regarding the safety of Titanium dioxide.

Article Synopsis
  • Frailty is a significant predictor of poor outcomes and higher mortality rates in patients undergoing vascular surgery, particularly during the resource-limited COVID-19 pandemic.
  • In a study involving 917 patients, 22.1% were identified as frail, with no significant difference in mortality rates between frail and non-frail patients over 30 days and 6 months; however, frail patients experienced longer hospital stays and more complications.
  • The study emphasizes the need for targeted care interventions for frail individuals to prevent adverse outcomes, particularly during healthcare challenges like pandemics.

The accurate measurement of diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) wound size is essential as the rate of wound healing is a significant prognostic indicator of the likelihood of complete wound healing. Mobile phone photography is often used for surveillance and to aid in telemedicine consultations. However, there remains no accurate and objective measurement of wound size integrated into these photos.
