Radiologic correlation between the thickness of the roof of the glenoid fossa and that of the bony covering of the superior semicircular canal.

Objectives: Dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal (SSC) has been associated with alteration of the temporomandibular joint, although data explaining this association are lacking. The present study examined the correlations between the presence of dehiscences and thickness of the bone covering the SSC and the roof of the glenoid fossa (RGF).

Study Design: Computed tomography was used in a cross-sectional analysis of the presence of dehiscences and thickness of the bone overlying the SCC and RGF in 156 temporal bones of 78 patients.

Efficacy of mandibular advancement device in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome: A randomized controlled crossover clinical trial.

Background: Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of a mandibular advancement device (MAD) (KlearwayTM) in the treatment of mild-to-moderate obstructive sleep apnea and chronic roncopathy.

Material And Methods: A randomized, placebo-controlled, double blinded, and crossover clinical trial was conducted. Placebo device (PD) defined as a splint in the centric occlusion that did not induce a mandibular advancement served as a control.

Mucocutaneous leishmaniasis must be included in the differential diagnosis of midline destructive disease: two case reports.

Midline destructive lesions have multiple possible etiologies, which can be grouped into neoplastic, infectious, or vasculitis-associated. The purpose of these case reports and literature review was to highlight the need to include mucocutaneous leishmaniasis in the diagnosis of midfacial lesions in any patient who has lived in Leishmania-endemic areas because this entity meets all of the clinical criteria to be considered a form of midline destructive lesion. We present two cases of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis that occurred in a Bolivian male immigrant and a European male traveler to Panama, in whom lesions were misdiagnosed as different midline destructive lesions with different causes (Wegener, vasculitis, and natural killer or T-cell lymphoma [NKTL]).

Frequency of the odontogenic maxillary sinusitis extended to the anterior ethmoid sinus and response to surgical treatment.

Objectives: Odontogenic sinusitis usually affects the maxillary sinus but may extend to the anterior ethmoid sinuses. The purpose of this study is to determine the percentage of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis extended to the anterior ethmoid sinuses and determine also the surgical resolution differences between odontogenic maxillary sinusitis and odontogenic maxillary associated to anterior ethmoidal sinusitis.

Study Design: This is a retrospective cohort study performed on 55 patients diagnosed of odontogenic sinusitis and treated surgically by functional endoscopic sinus surgery.

[A new cause of structural vertigo: superior semicircular canal dehiscence].

The medical history of vertigo must be updated to accommodate current knowledge. In 1998 a new cause of vertigo associated with a structural anomaly was reported: superior semicircular canal dehiscence. This condition causes vestibular and auditory disorders, which are frequently associated, and a well-directed medical history allows a suspected diagnosis to be reached: the subject may suffer from vertigo triggered by loud sounds (Tullio's phenomenon) and by changes in pressure within the ear or in the intracranial space, when Valsalva's manoeuvres are performed or on pressing on the tragus (Hennebert's sign).
