Colistin is often used in piglets but underdosing and overdosing are frequent. The impact of such administrations on fecal microbiota was studied. Piglets were given either underdoses of colistin by oral gavage for five days or overdoses by in-feed medication for 14days.

Article Synopsis
  • DNA vaccination is a novel method developed over the past 20 years that uses plasmid DNA injections to stimulate an immune response, offering a potential alternative to traditional vaccines.
  • Electroporation, a technique that helps DNA enter cells more effectively, has been explored to boost the effectiveness of these DNA vaccines.
  • Research in growing piglets demonstrated that electroporation did not significantly increase the retention of plasmids in muscle tissue, with all levels found to be below FDA limits for integration into host DNA.

Resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins (ESCs) is an important health concern. Here, we studied the impact of the administration of a long-acting form of ceftiofur on the pig gut microbiota and ESC resistance in Escherichia coli. Pigs were orally inoculated with an ESC-resistant E.

As nutritional status and inflammation are strongly connected, feeding and nutritional strategies could be effective to improve the ability of pigs to cope with disease. The aims of this study were to investigate the impact of a feed restriction on the ability of pigs to resist and be tolerant to a coinfection with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (Mhp) and the European H1N1 swine influenza virus, and the consequences for nutrient metabolism, with a focus on amino acids. Two groups of specific pathogen-free pigs were inoculated with Mhp and H1N1 21 days apart.

Zoonotic transmission of hepatitis E virus (HEV) is of special concern, particularly in high income countries were waterborne infections are less frequent than in developing countries. High HEV seroprevalences can be found in European pig populations. The aims of this study were to obtain prevalence data on HEV infection in swine in Belgium and to phylogenetically compare Belgian human HEV sequences with those obtained from swine.
