Assessing how individuals conceptualize numeric pain ratings: validity and reliability of the Pain Schema Inventory (PSI-6) Short Form.

Background: While numeric scales to represent pain intensity have been well validated, individuals use various conceptualizations when assigning a number to pain intensity, referred to as pain rating schema. The 18-item Pain Schema Inventory (PSI-18) quantifies pain rating schema by asking for numeric values for multiple mild, moderate or severe pain conditions. This study aimed to assess the validity and reliability of a shortened form of the PSI, using only 6 items (PSI-6).

Effect of crutch and walking-boot use on whole-body angular momentum during gait.

Crutches are the most prescribed ambulatory assistive device and are used for mobility and maintaining weight-bearing restrictions after injury or surgery. However, standard axillary crutches (SACs) can lead to overuse and other injuries and restrict upper limb movement. Hands-free crutches (HFC) do not restrict upper limb movement but their effect on balance control, with or without commonly prescribed walking boots, is poorly understood.

Carbon fiber ankle-foot orthoses in impaired populations: A systematic review.

Background: Carbon fiber is increasingly being used in ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs). Orthotic devices and carbon fiber-containing devices have been shown to reduce pain and improve function in multiple patient populations. Although the number of publications and interest in carbon fiber AFOs is growing, a systematic evaluation of their effects is lacking.

The effect of the median nerve compression test on median nerve conduction across the carpal tunnel.

Introduction: We conducted an experimental, single-blind research study to determine the efficacy of using the median nerve compression test (MNCT) to improve the sensitivity and specificity of median nerve motor and sensory latencies for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). We expected post-MNCT latencies to be prolonged in the CTS group.

Methods: A convenience sample of 18 subjects aged 18-65 was enrolled in this study.
