Background: Age and certain medical/social conditions are risk factors for invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). For prevention of IPD, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) has recommended the 23-valent polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine, PNEU-P-23, for adults 65 years of age and older and adults over 18 years of age living with certain underlying conditions. NACI has also recommended 13-valent conjugate pneumococcal vaccine, PNEU-C-13, for adults; however, in publicly funded programs, this recommendation is limited to individuals with risk factors for IPD.

To assess the feasibility of high-temperature aminolysis of deoxyribooligonucleotides containing rare bases as a method to determine their base sequence, the 2'-βD-deoxyribosides of 5-bromouracil, 2-aminopurine, uracil, adenine, cytosine, 5-methylcytosine, hypoxanthine, N-methyladenine, N-ethylcytosine, and guanine were compared as to their rate of degradation in 0.5 M aqueous pyrrolidine at 110 °C, conditions used earlier in the analysis of oligonucleotides containing only the canonical bases. The reaction mixtures were analyzed by chromatography on Zorbax XDB-CN and UV absorption spectroscopy.

We explore the use of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) trained on overhead imagery of biomass sorghum to ascertain the relationship between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), or groups of related SNPs, and the phenotypes they control. We consider both CNNs trained explicitly on the classification task of predicting whether an image shows a plant with a reference or alternate version of various SNPs as well as CNNs trained to create data-driven features based on learning features so that images from the same plot are more similar than images from different plots, and then using the features this network learns for genetic marker classification. We characterize how efficient both approaches are at predicting the presence or absence of a genetic markers, and visualize what parts of the images are most important for those predictions.

The effect of vicinal molecular groups on the intrinsic acidity of a central guanine residue in short single-stranded DNA models and the potentials exerted by the backbone and the nucleobases on the leaving proton were determined by the fragment molecular orbital (FMO) method, in terms of quantum descriptors (QDs) and pair interaction interfragment decomposition analysis (PIEDA). The acidity of the central guanine moiety decreased with increasing oligonucleotide length, in response to changes by less than 1 eV in the ionization potential, global softness, electrophilicity index, and electronegativity descriptors. The differences in these descriptors were majorly interpreted in terms of the electrostatic influence of the negative charges residing on the backbone of the molecule.
