Actinobacillus ureae meningitis: case report and review of the literature.

Actinobacillus urea, formerly known as Pasteurella ureae, is an uncommon commensal of the upper respiratory tract in humans. It has been identified as the primary pathogen in 10 cases of meningitis and several cases of pneumonia, sepsis, and peritonitis. A case is presented that represents another documented case of meningitis due to this rare organism.

Time of symptom onset of eight common medical emergencies.

Specific time periods of the day may be associated with different frequencies of symptom onset in different diseases. The purpose of the current study was to examine times of symptom onset in eight commonly encountered emergent conditions--cerebral infarction, cerebral hemorrhage, transient ischemic attacks, cardiac dysrhythmias, angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction, gastrointestinal bleeding, and acute asthma. Data from 4554 cases were retrospectively reviewed.

Phytohemagglutinin induced proliferation by aged lymphocytes: reduced expression of high affinity interleukin-2 receptors and interleukin-2 secretion.

Human lymphocytes from elderly and young donors were cultured with phytohemagglutinin. Cultures from two groups of aged donors, recruited respectively from our ambulatory clinic and a nursing home, incorporated less tritiated thymidine (3H-TdR) and secreted less interleukin-2 than did young donors. Furthermore, as determined for the first time by a radioligand binding receptor assay, the aged lymphoblasts possessed significantly fewer high affinity IL-2 receptors per cell.
