Upper Airway Sensory Testing in Dysphagia - Implications for Clinical Practice and Future Research Directions.

Adequate upper airway (oral, pharyngeal and laryngeal) sensation is crucial for safe and efficient swallowing and airway protection. Despite its importance, methods of upper airway sensory testing for individuals with dysphagia remain poorly defined. The aim of this study was to summarise and appraise current methods of upper airway sensory testing to inform dysphagia clinical practice and future research directions.

Developing new practices for managing breast and chest lymphoedema.

Some patients develop breast/chest lymphoedema following breast cancer treatment. Historically this group of patients has been managed in the same way as those with limb lymphoedema, through the application of compression in the form of vests or bras. Some patients reported pain and the feeling of being in a 'strait jacket' and, therefore, abandoned these items for lighter and more comfortable garments without any adverse effects.

Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is a devastating rare neurodegenerative disease. Typically, loss of motor and cognitive skills precedes early death. The disease is characterised by deficient lysosomal arylsulphatase A (ARSA) activity and an accumulation of undegraded sulphatide due to pathogenic variants in the ARSA gene.

Improving escalation of deteriorating patients through cognitive task analysis: Understanding differences between work-as-prescribed and work-as-done.

Background: Appropriate care escalation requires the detection and communication of in-hospital patient deterioration. Although deterioration in the ward environment is common, there continue to be patient deaths where problems escalating care have occurred. Learning from the everyday work of health care professionals (work-as-done) and identifying performance variability may provide a greater understanding of the escalation challenges and how they overcome these.
