History of Cervical Spine Localization: Surface Landmarks.

Interest in the relational anatomy of the anterior neck among spine surgeons increased after the popularization of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion in the 1950s. Five surface landmarks and their relationship to specific spinal levels have been routinely described, comprising the angle of the mandible for the C2-C3 interspace, the hyoid bone for the C3 body, the thyroid cartilage for the C4-C5 disc, and the cricoid cartilage and carotid tubercle for the C6 body. We aimed to investigate the origins of these anatomic relationships and their application in modern practice.

Oxenoid Reactivity Enabled by Targeted Photoactivation of Periodate.

The chemistry of low-valent intermediates continues to inspire new modes of reactivity across synthetic chemistry. But while the generation and reactivity of both carbenes and nitrenes are well-established, difficulties in accessing oxene, their oxygen-based congener, has severely hampered its application in synthesis. Here, we report a conceptually novel approach towards oxenoid reactivity through the violet-light photolysis of tetrabutylammonium periodate.

sp. nov., sp. nov., sp. nov. and sp. nov., type I methane-oxidizing bacteria isolated from a freshwater creek and the deep terrestrial subsurface.

Four methane-oxidizing bacteria, designated as strains WSC-6, WSC-7, SURF-1, and SURF-2, were isolated from Saddle Mountain Creek in southwestern Oklahoma, USA, and the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, USA. The strains were Gram-negative, motile, short rods that possessed intracytoplasmic membranes characteristic of type I methanotrophs. All four strains were oxidase-negative and weakly catalase-positive.
