Personality traits of pharmacy and medical students throughout their course of studies.

Background: Pharmacists and medical doctors are two professional groups that very often receive their education and practice in the same environment. However, their approach to patient care and collaboration tends to be different and this may lead to both frustration and conflict which may adversely affect patient care. Personality has been identified as a psychological issue that could contribute to conflict in a work situation.

Flow cytometry and thromboelastography to assess platelet counts and coagulation in patients with haematological malignancies.

Background: Accurate platelet counts (PC) are necessary in order to follow recommendations for prophylactic platelet transfusion. We carried out a study comparing the standard way of counting platelets using a routine analyser and compared it with PC determined by flow cytometry (FC) and haemostatic data obtained with thromboelastography (TEG).

Materials And Methods: The study was carried out on 24 patients with haematological malignancies, all given one adult dose of platelets.

Cytomegalovirus disease, haemophagocytic syndrome, immunosuppression in patients with IBD: 'a cocktail best avoided, not stirred'.

We report two cases of cytomegalovirus (CMV) viraemia resulting in severe pneumonitis and associated haemophagocytic syndrome manifesting in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, on stable doses of azathioprine in clinical remission. In both cases, azathioprine was withdrawn at time of hospital presentation and after delays in diagnosis; intravenous ganciclovir was then administered, with resultant rapid improvement of haematological and clinical parameters. Following recovery, immunomodulators were not recommenced given patient aversion and the theoretical risk of CMV reactivation, albeit the evidence for this approach is limited.

Prospective assessment of the diagnostic and therapeutic impact of small-bowel push enteroscopy.

Background And Study Aims: Although the reported diagnostic yield of push enteroscopy has been substantial in previous studies, its clinical impact has never been prospectively evaluated. The primary aim of this study was to prospectively determine the diagnostic and therapeutic impact of enteroscopy. In addition, the yield of new and clinically important findings was prospectively assessed.
