This report describes the experiences of a community-based palliative care (CBPC) program's efforts to understand the patterns of hospital utilization, specifically utilization reduction experienced by admitted patients. Efforts to quantify and describe an avoided hospitalization and opportunities to use these data to strengthen partnerships with local insurance payers to assure sustainability of the CBPC will be discussed. Patients with serious chronic illness experience emergency room care and hospitalizations with increasing frequency as their health deteriorates.

The relationship between chemical structure and odor characteristics of aroma compounds is interesting in terms of establishing a fundamental understanding and, in the long term, a perspective for the prediction of odor qualities and intensities of unknown compounds; on the other hand, such studies provide a useful tool to analytically elucidate compounds that are exceptionally potent odor contributors to a specific smell. In this respect, a broad knowledge of compounds with regard to their odor threshold and smell specificities compiled in a comprehensive odor library would drastically simplify the chemoanalytical process in identifying aromas and smells. Whereas numerous odor-active substance classes have been investigated intensively, such relationships and fundamental data have hitherto not been established for volatile phenols.

We tested tafenoquine (WR 238605), a new long-acting 8-aminoquinoline, for its ability to prevent malaria in an area that is holoendemic for Plasmodium falciparum. In a double-blinded, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial in western Kenya, adult volunteers received a treatment course of 250 mg halofantrine per day for 3 days, to effect clearance of preexisting parasites. The volunteers were then assigned to 1 of 4 drug regimens: placebo throughout; 3 days of 400 mg (base) of tafenoquine per day, followed by placebo weekly; 3 days of 200 mg of tafenoquine per day, followed by 200 mg per week; and 3 days of 400 mg of tafenoquine per day, followed by 400 mg per week.

Multiple doses of arteether (ARTE) at 25 mg/kg cause CNS and anorectic toxicities in rats. The same dose of ARTE was used to study the toxicokinetics (TK) after multiple injections and the pharmacokinetics (PK) following single administration. Animals were administered ARTE in sesame oil for 7 days, blood samples were collected using destructive sampling for up to 192 h after dosing and assayed by HPLC-ECD.
