There is evidence that balance performance deteriorates due to exercise-induced muscle fatigue. However, it is unknown if free arm movement during balance testing can compensate for, or restricted arm movement can amplify these performance degradations. Thus, the objective of this study was to compare the effects of free versus restricted arm movement on balance performance under non-fatigued and fatigued conditions.

Objective: Optical coherence elastography (OCE) has been introduced for several medical applications to determine tissue mechanical parameters. However, in order to measure sensitive healthy tissue like brain in vivo, the excitation force needs to be carefully controlled and as low as possible (under 100 μN). Preferably, the excitation should be applied in a non-contact manner.

Neurosurgical interventions on the brain are impeded by the requirement to keep damages to healthy tissue at a minimum. A new contrast channel enhancing the visual separation of malign tissue should be created. A commercially available surgical microscope was modified with adaptation optics adapting the MHz speed optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging system developed in our group.

Article Synopsis
  • Manual adjustment of laser power in retinal therapies is inefficient and can lead to inconsistent treatment effects, while automatic temperature control ensures uniform heating across different areas, which is vital for safe procedures.
  • Utilizing a model predictive controller and an extended Kalman filter, real-time temperature monitoring enhances the precision of retinal laser treatments on porcine eye explants.
  • The results indicate that the closed-loop control approach not only maintains consistent lesion sizes despite varying tissue absorption but also minimizes the risks of over- and undertreatment, showcasing its potential to improve retinal therapies for various conditions.
