Evaluating and Validating the Fluorescent Probe Methodology for Measuring the Effective Hydrophobicity of Protein, Protein Hydrolyzate, and Amino Acid.

The fluorescent probe method with 8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonic acid ammonium salt (ANSA) and 6-propionyl-2-(,-dimethylamino) naphthalene (PRODAN) was validated to determine the effective hydrophobicity of the whey protein isolate. The focus was on charge and hydrophobic interactions due to the complexation between the proteins and probes. Using ANSA could overestimate the effective hydrophobicity of positively charged proteins.

A predictive model to assess the accumulation of microplastics in the natural environment.

The use of plastics inevitably leads to (micro-)plastics entering and accumulating in the natural environment, affecting biodiversity, food security and human health. Currently, a comprehensive and universally applicable methodology to quantify microplastic accumulation in the natural environment is lacking. This study proposes an integrated biodegradation model that provides the possibility to examine and compare the microplastic formation and accumulation of different polymer types in diverse natural environments.

Pneumocephalus due to temporohyoid osteoarthropathy in a 16-year-old Friesian mare.

A sixteen-year-old Friesian mare was admitted to the university clinic with the following clinical signs: anorexia, weight loss, fever, bilateral nasal discharge, unilateral facial paralysis and a non-healing corneal lesion. Endoscopic examination of the upper airways showed thickening of the proximal portion of the right stylohyoid bone. Computed tomography imaging showed pneumocephalus due to grade 3 unilateral temporohyoid osteoarthropathy (THO) with fracture of the petrous temporal bone.

Encapsulation of cannabidiol in hemp seed oleosomes.

Oleosomes are natural lipid droplets that can be extracted intact from oil seeds, forming oil/water emulsions. Their lipid cores, surrounded by a monolayer of phospholipids and proteins, make oleosomes suitable as carriers of hydrophobic bioactive compounds like cannabidiol (CBD). As CBD is crystalline at room temperature, it first has to be liquified to allow better encapsulation.
