Spatial polarimetric second harmonic generation evaluation of collagen in a hypophosphatasia mouse model.

Polarization-resolved second harmonic generation (pSHG) is a label-free method that has been used in a range of tissue types to describe collagen orientation. In this work, we develop pSHG analysis techniques for investigating cranial bone collagen assembly defects occurring in a mouse model of hypophosphatasia (HPP), a metabolic bone disease characterized by a lack of bone mineralization. After observing differences in bone collagen lamellar sheet structures using scanning electron microscopy, we found similar alterations with pSHG between the healthy and HPP mouse collagen lamellar sheet organization.

Molecular investigation of strains associated with ocular syphilis in the United States, 2016-2020.

Ocular syphilis is a serious complication of infection that can occur at any stage of syphilis and affect any eye structure. It remains unknown if certain strains are associated with ocular infections; therefore, we performed genotyping and whole genome sequencing (WGS) to characterize strains from patients with ocular syphilis. Seventy-five ocular or non-ocular specimens from 55 ocular syphilis patients in 14 states within the United States were collected between February 2016 and November 2020.

Deliberately introduced dung beetles in Australia: 12 years of occurrence and abundance records from 2001 to 2022.

Since 1968, the Australian Dung Beetle Project has carried out field releases of 43 deliberately introduced dung beetle species for the biological control of livestock dung and dung-breeding pests. Of these, 23 species are known to have become established. For most of these species, sufficient time has elapsed for population expansion to fill the extent of their potential geographic range through both natural and human-assisted dispersal.

Antibiotic prophylaxis in alloplastic temporomandibular joint replacement surgery: A multi-national survey of temporomandibular joint surgeons.

Temporomandibular disorders include a wide spectrum of extra-articular and intra-articular conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). In salvage cases involving intra-articular end-stage disease, alloplastic temporomandibular joint replacement (TMJR) is a management option which can be utilised to rehabilitate a disabled joint's function and form. Whilst post-TMJR infection is rare, it is one of the most serious complications.

An Unusual Case of an Odontogenic Keratocyst Associated with an Impacted Incisor.

We present a case of an odontogenic keratocyst discovered as an incidental finding in the anterior mandible of a young female patient. This is an unusual presentation, and very few cases affecting the anterior mandible are reported in the literature.
