Background: Autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED) is a rare recessive inherited disease caused by the mutation of the AIRE gene on chromosome 21. To date, 8 Sicilian patients have been described and the R203X AIRE mutation was found to be the most common in this region.

Aims: (1) To describe 7 additional Sicilian APECED patients and to review all 15 Sicilian APECED patients who have been investigated by our group in the last years, and (2) to report a novel AIRE gene mutation.

Objective: The myeloid-related proteins 8 and 14 (MRP-8/MRP-14) and neutrophil-derived S100A12 are biomarkers of inflammation. They can be used to determine the relapse risk in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) after stopping antiinflammatory treatment. In this study, we tested the performance of different enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) in order to validate systems available for routine use.

Objective: To investigate the rate of radiographic progression, as measured with the carpo-metacarpal ratio (Poznanski score), during etanercept (ETN) therapy in children with polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).

Methods: Patients included in the Italian ETN registry who had a standard radiograph of both hands and wrists in the posteroanterior view made at start of treatment and after 1 year were included in the study. The clinical response was assessed by means of the ACR Pediatric definition of improvement.
