Animals have the innate ability to select optimal defensive behaviors with appropriate intensity within specific contexts. The vomeronasal organ (VNO) serves as a primary sensory channel for detecting predator cues by relaying signals to the medial hypothalamic nuclei, particularly the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH), which directly controls defensive behavioral outputs. Here, we demonstrate that cat saliva contains predator cues that signal the imminence of predator threat and modulate the intensity of freezing behavior through the VNO in mice.

Animals have the innate ability to select optimal defensive behaviors with appropriate intensity in response to predator threats within specific contexts. Such innate behavioral decisions are thought to be computed in the medial hypothalamic nuclei, which contain neural populations that directly control defensive behavioral outputs. The vomeronasal organ (VNO) serves as a primary sensory channel for detecting predator cues by relaying signals to the medial hypothalamic nuclei, particularly the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH), via the medial amygdala (MeA) and bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST).

Background: Scalable and safe approaches for heart failure guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) optimization are needed.

Objectives: The authors assessed the safety and effectiveness of a virtual care team guided strategy on GDMT optimization in hospitalized patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).

Methods: In a multicenter implementation trial, we allocated 252 hospital encounters in patients with left ventricular ejection fraction ≤40% to a virtual care team guided strategy (107 encounters among 83 patients) or usual care (145 encounters among 115 patients) across 3 centers in an integrated health system.

A series of 1,4-naphthoquinone derivatives were synthesized and tested for antifungal and antitumor activity against a number of fungal disease causative species and Walker 256 carcinoma cell lines. The results show that the compounds 8a,e and 11b possess pronounced antifungal profile where as 7b and f were found to be active against Walker 256 carcinoma cell lines. Moreover 7c and 11a showed inhibitory effect against reverse transcriptase enzyme from Rauscher Murine Leukemia Virus.

[reaction: see text] Bicyclic and tricyclic gamma-butyrolactones with 5,7-, 5,6,5-, 5,6,6-, or 5,7,5-fused ring systems, being found in xanthanolides, eudesmanolides, and guaianolides, were readily synthesized from methyl furan-2-carboxylic acid. Key steps were a copper(I)-catalyzed asymmetric cyclopropanation, Sakurai allylations, intramolecular ene reactions, and ring-closing metathesis reactions.
