Background: To assess the adverse food reactions (AFR) prevalence in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and in non-ASD healthy controls (NASD). Nutritional status alterations, food selectivity and adherence to Mediterranean Diet (MD) were also evaluated.

Methods: The NAFRA (Nutritional status and Adverse Food Reactions in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder) project was an observational, case-control, comparative study conducted at a tertriary center for pediatrics involving Caucasian patients of both sexes, aged 18 months-7 years, with a diagnosis of ASD, and matched NASD controls.

The globally dramatic increase in food allergy prevalence and severity is demanding effective preventive and therapeutic strategies. Food allergy derives from a defect of immune tolerance mechanisms. Immune tolerance is modulated by gut microbiome composition and function, and gut microbiome dysbiosis has been associated with the development of food allergy.

The recent advisory issued by the United States Food and Drug Administration, cautioning against the routine administration of probiotics in preterm neonates, has sparked a lively debate within the scientific community. This commentary presents a perspective from members of the Special Interest Group on Gut Microbiota and Modifications within the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) and other authors who contributed to the ESPGHAN position paper on probiotics for preterm infants, as well as representatives from the European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants. We advocate for a more nuanced and supportive approach to the use of certain probiotics in this vulnerable population, balancing the demonstrated benefits and risks.

Sugars can bind non-enzymatically to proteins, nucleic acids or lipids and form compounds called Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs). Although AGEs can form , factors in the Western diet such as high amounts of added sugars, processing methods such as dehydration of proteins, high temperature sterilisation to extend shelf life, and cooking methods such as frying and microwaving (and reheating), can lead to inordinate levels of dietary AGEs. Dietary AGEs (dAGEs) have the capacity to bind to the Receptor for Advanced Glycation End Products (RAGE) which is part of the endogenous threat detection network.
