Individual differences in the temporal relationship between sleep and agitation: a single-subject study in nursing home residents with dementia experiencing sleep disturbance and agitation.

Objectives: Previous studies on the interrelationship between sleep and agitation relied on group-aggregates and so results may not be applicable to individuals. This proof-of-concept study presents the single-subject study design with time series analysis as a method to evaluate the association between sleep and agitation in individual nursing home residents using actigraphy.

Method: To record activity, three women and two men (aged 78-89 years) wore the MotionWatch 8© (MW8) for 9 consecutive weeks.

Mental versus physical fatigue after subarachnoid hemorrhage: differential associations with outcome.

Background And Purpose: Fatigue is a major consequence of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), but the specific characteristics are unclear. Our objective was to investigate the nature of post-SAH fatigue (mental or physical) and to determine the relationship with functional outcome in the chronic stage. Also, the possible influence of mood disorders and acute SAH-related factors [SAH type and external cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage] on the presence of fatigue was investigated.

Cerebral oxygenation during the first days of life in preterm and term neonates: differences between different brain regions.

Near-infrared spectroscopy is a noninvasive method for monitoring brain oxygenation. The aim of the study was to investigate differences between cerebral oxygenation in different brain regions in newborns. In a prospective study, we monitored simultaneously left and right frontoparietal and temporo-occipital regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rScO2) and cerebral fractional tissue extraction (cFTOE: (arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) - rScO2)/SaO2) using near-infrared spectroscopy.
