The role of microbes inhabiting various body sites in supporting host physiology and health is substantial, and recent advancements in DNA sequencing technology have facilitated a more in-depth understanding of these microbial contributions. The influence of microbiota within a given organ can be broadly categorized as having two main functions: (1) promoting organ homeostasis and (2) creating conditions that inhibit the growth of pathogenic microorganisms, thereby protecting the host from diseases. In livestock production, numerous phenotypes critical to industry outcomes are affected by the microbiome, which has sparked considerable academic interest in recent years.

Importance: For hospitalized critically ill adults with suspected sepsis, procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) monitoring protocols can guide the duration of antibiotic therapy, but the evidence of the effect and safety of these protocols remains uncertain.

Objective: To determine whether decisions based on assessment of CRP or PCT safely results in a reduction in the duration of antibiotic therapy.

Design, Setting, And Participants: A multicenter, intervention-concealed randomized clinical trial, involving 2760 adults (≥18 years), in 41 UK National Health Service (NHS) intensive care units, requiring critical care within 24 hours of initiating intravenous antibiotics for suspected sepsis and likely to continue antibiotics for at least 72 hours.

Article Synopsis
  • The CMG helicase complex is essential for controlling gene expression during asymmetric cell divisions in C. elegans.
  • The specific component PSF-2 GINS2 is necessary for activating the pro-apoptotic gene egl-1, which is crucial for programmed cell death.
  • The study highlights CMG's role in influencing cell fates and suggests it affects gene expression beyond just egl-1 regulation.

The surge in multidrug-resistant bacteria against conventional antibiotics is a rapidly developing global health crisis necessitating novel infection management strategies. Host defence peptides (HDPs), also known as antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), offer a promising alternative to traditional antibiotics, but their practical translation is limited by their susceptibility to proteases and potential off-site cytotoxicity. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of using gelatin emulsion gels (GELs), prepared using a water-in-oil (W/O) method, for the delivery of HDPs DJK-5 and IDR-1018 to improve their clinical utility.

Objective: Socioeconomic status deprivation is known to be associated with self-harm in Western countries but there is less information about this association in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC). One way of investigating this is to assess the prevalence of indicators of financial stress in people who self-harm. We have assessed the prevalence and correlates of day-to-day financial hardships amongst individual presenting with non-fatal self-harm to hospitals in Sri Lanka.
