Unlabelled: Objectives The ordinary, ongoing sense of personal existing, variously called higher order consciousness, mind, or self, is disintegrated, constricted and distorted in those who have suffered repetitive psychological traumata. Their speech has the form of a 'chronicle', literal and asymbolic. This paper offers a condensed rationale for a relational approach to this, so far, neglected problem.

Cortical arousal in children and adolescents with functional neurological symptoms during the auditory oddball task.

Objective: Stress, pain, injury, and psychological trauma all induce arousal-mediated changes in brain network organization. The associated, high level of arousal may disrupt motor-sensory processing and result in aberrant patterns of motor function, including functional neurological symptoms. We used the auditory oddball paradigm to assess cortical arousal in children and adolescents with functional neurological symptom disorder.

The sense of the spirit as a form of conversation.

Experiential evidence suggests that the main features of spiritual experience are euphoria, and a feeling of the expansion and unification of consciousness. A way towards understanding this state and how it might arise comes from a consideration of a state in which these features are lacking. Such a state is borderline personality disorder, central to which is a "painful incoherence" that is not merely "psychological" but can be demonstrated neurophysiologically.

Increasing sensitivity in the measurement of heart rate variability: the method of non-stationary RR time-frequency analysis.

A novel method of the time-frequency analysis of non-stationary heart rate variability (HRV) is developed which introduces the fragmentary spectrum as a measure that brings together the frequency content, timing and duration of HRV segments. The fragmentary spectrum is calculated by the similar basis function algorithm. This numerical tool of the time to frequency and frequency to time Fourier transformations accepts both uniform and non-uniform sampling intervals, and is applicable to signal segments of arbitrary length.

Is self disturbance the core of borderline personality disorder? An outcome study of borderline personality factors.

Object: To determine which constellation of clinical features constitutes the core of borderline personality disorder (BPD).

Method: The criterion of endurance was used to identify the constellation of features which are most basic, or core, in borderline personality disorder. Two sets of constellations of DSM-III features were tested, each consisting of three groupings.
