Finite element modeling, validation, and parametric investigations of a retinal reattachment stent.

A new retinal reattachment surgical procedure is based on a stent that is deployed to press the retina back in place. An eye-stent finite element model studied the strain induced by the stent on retina. Finite element model simulations were performed for several stent geometric configurations (number of loops, wire diameter, and intraocular pressure).

Surrogate testing for non-A, non-B hepatitis in Queensland, Australia: an ALT microtitre tray method for screening blood donors.

The estimation of plasma alanine aminotransferase (ALT) has been proposed as a surrogate test to identify potential non-A, non-B hepatitis carriers in blood donor populations. This report describes an ALT screening procedure which uses wells of microtitration trays as reactant vessels. The method utilizes a rate reading photometer, is economical and conveniently fits into the routine workflow.

Experimental arthritis induced by intraarticular injection of allogenic cartilaginous particles into rabbit knees.

Human synovial fluid often contains small cartilaginous "wear particles." Previous in vitro experiments have indicated the potential involvement of these particles in the pathophysiology of arthritis. To determine whether this potential is realized under the conditions existing within joints, standard suspensions of lapine articular cartilage were injected intraarticularly into the knee joints of rabbits.
