Dendriform pulmonary ossification (DPO) is a rare condition characterized by mature bone formation in the lung. DPO has been linked to various conditions, but little is known about the link between DPO and hazardous airborne exposures. We queried research databases of military personnel evaluated for deployment-related respiratory diseases at two occupational pulmonary medicine clinics (Colorado, USA) for diagnoses of DPO, and summarized demographics, Gulf War military deployment history, medical history, and pulmonary function testing.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a complex disease pattern in which pathogenesis polymorphonuclear neutrophil granulocytes (PMN) play a key role. In previous experiments, we could show that interaction with collagen III (an important component of pulmonary tissue) is a possible trigger of neutrophil reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. To investigate possible correlations, further elucidate ARDS pathophysiology, and maybe find pharmacological targets, we evaluated PMNs from blood (circulating PMNs: cPMNs) and tracheal secretion (tPMNs) from patients with and without ARDS with regard to function and phenotype.

Background: There is increasing evidence that nitric oxide (nitrogen monoxide, NO) significantly influences immune cellular responses, including those from polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs).

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine a possible effect of NO on PMNs' function (chemotaxis, production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and NETosis) using live cell imaging. Moreover, we investigated PMN surface epitope and neutrophil oxidative burst under the influence of NO by flow cytometric analysis.

The application of normo- and hyperbaric O is a common therapy option in various disease patterns. Thereby, the applied O affects the whole body, including the blood and its components. This study investigates influences of pressure and oxygen fraction on human blood plasma, nutrient media, and the functions of neutrophil granulocytes (PMNs).

Walleye (Sander vitreus) are a sexually dimorphic species in which females are larger than males in adulthood. Walleye can also exhibit sex- and population-based differences in migration behavior. In Lake Erie, we used acoustic telemetry to test the prediction that female walleye exhibit larger broad-scale movements than males during the summer and autumn.
