Dendritic cells (DCs) are a phenotypically and functionally heterogenous population of leukocytes with distinct subsets serving a different set of specialized immune functions. Here we applied an in vitro whole cell panning approach using antibody phage display technology to identify cell-surface epitopes specifically expressed on human blood BDCA3(+) DCs. A single-chain antibody fragment (anti-1F12 scFv) was isolated that recognizes a conserved surface antigen expressed on both human BDCA3(+) DCs and mouse CD8alpha(+) DCs.

A novel cytokine from a thymic stromal cell line (thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP)) promotes the development of B220+/IgM+ immature B cells when added to fetal liver cultures, long term bone marrow cultures, or bone marrow cells plated in semisolid medium. Because the activities of TSLP overlap with those of IL-7 in some in vitro assays, we compared the signaling mechanisms employed by TSLP and IL-7. Proliferation of a factor-dependent pre-B cell line (NAG8/7) in response to either TSLP or IL-7 was inhibited by anti-IL-7R alpha mAbs, suggesting that the functional TSLP receptor complex uses IL-7R alpha.

The partial sequence of a gene encoding the COOH terminus of a protein of apparent molecular weight of 160 kD associated with the flagellum of trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi (FL-160 now renamed to FL-160-1) has been previously reported. The COOH terminus of FL-160-1 has an epitope, defined by 12 amino acids, which molecularly miMics a nervous tissue antigen of 48 kD found in myenteric plexus, sciatic nerve, and a subset of cells in the central nervous system. We now report that FL-160 is a family of highly related genes.

Two cues, either size or flavor of food pellet, were conditionally paired with either malaise induced by x-ray or pain induced by shock in four groups of rats. The combination of flavor and illness produced as conditioned decrement in consumption, but that of size and illness did not. Conversely, the combination of size and pain produced an inhibition of eating, but flavor and pain did not.
