Replicons, derived from RNA viruses, are genetic constructs retaining essential viral enzyme genes while lacking key structural protein genes. Upon introduction into cells, the genes carried by the replicon RNA are expressed, and the RNA self-replicates, yet viral particle production does not take place. Typically, RNA replicons are transcribed in vitro and are then electroporated in cells.

With an ever increasing amount of research data available, it becomes constantly more important to possess data literacy skills to benefit from this valuable resource. An integrative course was developed to teach students the fundamentals of data literacy through an engaging genome sequencing project. Each cohort of students performed planning of the experiment, DNA extraction, nanopore sequencing, genome sequence assembly, prediction of genes in the assembled sequence, and assignment of functional annotation terms to predicted genes.

Background: Organic acidurias (OAs) are rare inborn errors of metabolism that can present with various neurologic manifestations, propensity for acute metabolic decompensation with anion-gap metabolic acidosis, developmental delay, poor feeding, and failure to thrive.

Objective: In this case series, we outline the anesthetic management and perioperative outcomes of OA patients.

Methods: We reviewed demographic characteristics, comorbidities, and perioperative course of patients with four different OAs who underwent anesthetic care at our institution between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2013.

Effective assurance of microbiological food safety practices in small and/or less developed businesses is not yet resolved. Although a start has been made by drafting hygiene codes, feasible methods for verifying manufacturing processes that rely on strict and meaningful criteria to be applied to process points are still lacking. This investigation is a model study with various types of ready-to-eat foods aimed at verifying adequate processing for safety and subsequent meticulous hygienic handling and safe storage of foods in small and/or less developed businesses by the use of quantitative methods for selected indicator organisms, as standardized by the International Organization for Standardization.

Anesthetic management of patients with mucopolysaccharidoses is well known. The anesthetic implications of patients with galactosialidosis may be similar to those with other well documented mucopolysaccharidoses, but no cases have been reported in the anesthesia-related literature. We present a case describing anesthetic management of a patient with galactosialidosis undergoing cervical spine surgery.
