Dental prosthesis plaque index of Augsburger and Elahi: Expansion and standardisation in community-dwelling frail older people.

Background: Inadequate daily oral hygiene care of dental prostheses could worsen general health of frail older people. The index of Augsburger and Elahi is often recommended to assess maxillary dental prosthesis plaque (DPP).

Objective: To assess the reliability of an expanded and standardised DPP index of Augsburger and Elahi in trained and untrained examiners, and to determine the applicability of the index in community-dwelling frail older people.

'Don't forget the mouth!': a process evaluation of a public oral health project in community-dwelling frail older people.

Background: Older people are encouraged to remain community dwelling, even when they become care-dependent. Not every dental practice is prepared or able to provide care to community-dwelling frail older people, while their ability to maintain oral health and to visit a dentist is decreasing, amongst others due to multiple chronic diseases and/or mobility problems. The public oral health project 'Don't forget the mouth! (DFTM!) aimed to improve the oral health of this population, by means of early recognition of decreased oral health as well as by establishing interprofessional care.

Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT) deputized to informal caregivers: Go or no go?

Objective: Investigating the usability of the Dutch version of the Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT-NL) with informal caregivers of community-dwelling older people with suspected dementia, without specific training.

Materials And Methods: In accordance with guidelines for establishing the cultural equivalency of instruments, the OHAT was translated into Dutch. Fifteen informal caregivers of community-dwelling older people with suspected dementia and, as a reference standard, a dentist assessed the oral health of the older people using the OHAT-NL.

Crying out in pain-A systematic review into the validity of vocalization as an indicator for pain.

Background: Vocalization is often used to assess pain, sometimes combined with other behaviours such as facial expressions. Contrary to facial expressions, however, for vocalization, there is little evidence available on the association with pain. The aim of this systematic review was to critically analyse the association between vocalization and pain, to explore if vocalizations can be used as a "stand-alone" indicator for pain.

[Research agenda oral care for older people in the Netherlands and Flanders (Belgium)].

Oral care for older people is an underexposed topic in dentistry as well as in general healthcare, while oral care professionals are increasingly confronted with frail and multimorbid older people with complex care needs. The research agenda 'Oral care for the elderly' was developed to encourage the collaboration of researchers in the Netherlands and Flanders (Belgium) to do more research in this area and in this way, to achieve an expansion and implementation of knowledge. This will make possible the provision of a socially responsible and robust basis for sustainable oral care for frail older people.
