For a hundred years or more, oil and natural gas has supplied fuel and other raw chemicals to support economic growth. In the last decades their shrinking reservoirs and the increasing cost of production has become obvious, leading researchers to look for alternative substitutes of all the chemical materials presently derived from oil and gas. This review is focused on xylan, the second most abundant plant polysaccharide on our planet.

We are developing a serotyping system for Actinobacillus suis based on its capsule (K) and lipopolysaccharide O-chain (O) structures. Previously, we have shown that less virulent strains of this swine pathogen express a (1→6)-β-D-glucan as both K- and O-chain polysaccharides and were serologically classified as K:1/O:1. Here, we show that representative A.

A sialylated oligosaccharide was identified in four representative strains of the Gram-negative swine pathogen, Actinobacillus suis. As characterized, the glycan consists of a free oligosaccharide with a N-acetyl-lactosamine-like backbone decorated with sialic acid, phosphoethanolamine (PEA) and O-acetyl units: 9-O-Ac-Neu5Ac-(2-->6)-beta-d-Galp-(1-->4)-beta-d-6-O-Ac-GlcpNAc-(1-->3)-[PEA-->6]-beta-d-Galp-(1-->3)-beta-d-GlcpNAc-(1-->2)-[9-O-Ac-Neu5Ac-(2-->6)]-beta-d-Galp-(1-->4)-beta-d-6-O-Ac-GlcpNAc-(1-->3)-[PEA-->6]-beta-d-Galp-(1-->3)-d-GlcpNAc. The ubiquitous expression of this sialylated glycan suggests that this carbohydrate may play an important role in the survival of A.

Background: This study was designed to develop a diabetes-specific questionnaire on parents' quality of life and satisfaction with their child's diabetes treatment, the WEll-being and Satisfaction of CAREgivers of Children with Diabetes Questionnaire, and to conduct psychometric validation of the WE-CARE.

Methods: Parents of 116 children aged 6 to 11 years were enrolled in the United States. Children had type 1 diabetes mellitus for > 1 year, had been treated with subcutaneous insulin for > or = 2 months, and had a recent glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C) measurement.

Spin-related electronic phase transitions in the fractional quantum Hall regime are accompanied by a large change in resistance. Combined with their sensitivity to spin orientation of nuclei residing in the same plane as the 2D electrons, they offer a convenient electrical probe to carry out nuclear magnetometry. Despite conditions which should allow both electronic and nuclear-spin subsystems to approach thermodynamic equilibrium, we uncover for the nuclei a remarkable and strongly electronic filling-factor-dependent deviation from the anticipated thermal nuclear-spin polarization.
