Early stage osteoarthritis (OA) is marked by loss of proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans (GAG), lowering fixed charge density, and impairing tissue osmotic function. The most common GAG replacement, chondroitin sulfate (CS), has failed to show effectiveness.
