Extracellular Traps: A Novel Therapeutic Target for Severe Asthma.

Asthma is a complicated disease defined by a combination of clinical symptoms and physiological characteristics. Typically, asthma is diagnosed by the presence of episodic cough, wheezing, or dyspnea triggered by variable environmental factors (allergens and respiratory infections), and reversible airflow obstruction. To date, the majority of asthmatic patients have been adequately controlled by anti-inflammatory/bronchodilating agents, but those with severe asthma (SA) have not been sufficiently controlled by high-dose inhaled corticosteroids-long-acting beta-agonists plus additional controllers including leukotriene modifiers.

Multi-agent reinforcement learning approach for hedging portfolio problem.

Developing a hedging strategy to reduce risk of losses for a given set of stocks in a portfolio is a difficult task due to cost of the hedge. In Vietnam stock market, cross-hedge is involved hedging a long position of a stock because there is no put option for the stock. In addition, only VN30 stock index futures contracts are traded on Hanoi Stock Exchange.

NSAID-Exacerbated Respiratory Disease (NERD): From Pathogenesis to Improved Care.

Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID)-exacerbated respiratory disease (NERD) is characterized by moderate-to-severe asthma and a higher prevalence of chronic rhinosinusitis/nasal polyps, but is a highly heterogeneous disorder with various clinical manifestations. Two major pathogenic mechanisms are: (1) overproduction of cysteinyl leukotrienes with dysregulation of arachidonic acid metabolism and (2) increased type 2 eosinophilic inflammation affected by genetic mechanisms. Aspirin challenge is the gold standard to diagnose NERD, whereas reliable biomarkers have yet not been identified.

Osteopontin contributes to late-onset asthma phenotypes in adult asthma patients.

Patients with late-onset asthma (LOA) have poor clinical outcomes. Osteopontin (OPN) is associated with airway inflammation and remodeling. To investigate the role of OPN in LOA compared to early-onset asthma (EOA), serum OPN levels were compared between 131 adult asthma patients (48 LOA and 83 EOA patients) and 226 healthy controls (HCs).

Community Participatory Interventions to Improve Farmer Knowledge and Practices of Household Biogas Unit Operation in Ha Nam Province, Vietnam.

Context: The use of biogas systems to treat livestock waste is a common practice in Vietnam. However, farmers' knowledge and practices of the safe and appropriate use of household biogas units (HBUs) are still limited and could negatively impact human, animal, and environmental health.

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of an intervention to improve knowledge and practices of biogas operation among farmers in 2 communes of Ha Nam Province, Vietnam.

Upconversion polymeric nanofibers containing lanthanide-doped nanoparticles via electrospinning.

Flexible and freestanding poly(methyl methacrylate) nanofibers containing the upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) of lanthanide-doped sodium yttrium fluoride have been successfully fabricated via an electrospinning process. The UCNPs in nanofibers commonly formed chain-like aggregates aligned along the fiber axes. The effect of the electrospinning process on the upconversion properties of the embedded UCNPs was explored by characterizing the time evolution of the upconversion emission following pulsed near-infrared excitation.

The relative biologic effectiveness versus linear energy transfer curve as an output-input relation for linear cellular systems.

Experiments have established that different radiation types have different magnitudes of biological response. When biological response is defined in terms of the Relative Biologic Effectiveness (RBE) and different radiation type is characterized by Linear Energy Transfer (LET), the plot of the RBE versus LET (RBE-LET) curve shows RBE to increase with increasing LET, to reach a maximum, and to decrease with further increasing LET. Perhaps due to the descriptive nature of biology, most quantitative models for the RBE-LET curve ignore the reality of the underlying molecular biology.

Fractionated proton radiation treatment for pediatric craniopharyngioma: preliminary report.
