Biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) has been used as a material to support bone grafting, repair, recovery, and regeneration over the past decades. However, the inherent weakness of BCP is its low porosity, which limits the infiltration, differentiation, and proliferation of bone cells. To address this issue, porous BCP was synthesized using polyethylene glycol (PEG) 1000 with weight ratio ranging from 20%-60% in BCP as the porogen through the powder-forming method.

Article Synopsis
  • Air pollution levels in Ho Chi Minh City exceed WHO standards, posing significant health risks and environmental concerns.
  • Recent studies have employed machine learning algorithms for air quality forecasting, but training multiple models for various pollutants can be labor-intensive.
  • A new multi-step global model has been developed to predict hourly concentrations of multiple pollutants (NO, SO, O, CO) using real-time data, outperforming previous models in accuracy according to RMSE and MAPE evaluations.

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) are carcinogenic pollutants. However, the average concentration in 1 h of some pollutants belonging to BTEX, such as benzene, in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is higher than the national standard QCVN 06:2009/BTNMT by about ten times. This research is the first to calculate the emission of BTEX for developing countries on a city scale.

Identification of tumor-derived mutation (TDM) in liquid biopsies (LB), especially in early-stage patients, faces several challenges, including low variant-allele frequencies, interference by white blood cell (WBC)-derived mutations (WDM), benign somatic mutations and tumor heterogeneity. Here, we addressed the above-mentioned challenges in a cohort of 50 nonmetastatic colorectal cancer patients, via a workflow involving parallel sequencing of paired WBC- and tumor-gDNA. After excluding potential false positive mutations, we detected at least one TDM in LB of 56% (28/50) of patients, with the majority showing low-patient coverage, except for one TDM mapped to that recurred in 30% (15/30) of patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Targeted therapy using tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) can improve survival rates for many patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but resistance to these treatments often develops.
  • A study analyzed the genetic and epigenetic changes in 122 Vietnamese NSCLC patients experiencing resistance to TKI therapy, finding that 41.8% had specific resistance mutations, particularly in the EGFR gene.
  • The research highlighted that the level of genome-wide hypomethylation was linked to how long patients responded to TKI, suggesting that liquid biopsies can help understand TKI resistance mechanisms and inform future treatment strategies.

Using density functional theory (DFT), we performed theoretical investigation on structural, energetic, electronic, and magnetic properties of pure armchair silicene nanoribbons with edges terminated with hydrogen atoms (ASiNRs:H), and the absorptions of silicon (Si) atom(s) on the top of ASiNRs:H. The calculated results show that Si atoms prefer to adsorb on the top site of ASiNRs:H and form the single- and/or di-adatom defects depending on the numbers. Si absorption defect(s) change electronic and magnetic properties of ASiNRs:H.
