To identify suitable potassium fertilizers for grape ( L.) production and study their mechanism of action, the effects of four potassium-containing fertilizers (complex fertilizer, potassium nitrate, potassium sulfate, and potassium dihydrogen phosphate) on sugar and organic acid metabolism in grape fruits were investigated. Potassium-containing fertilizers increased the activity of sugar and organic acid metabolism-related enzymes at all stages of grape fruit development.

Plums are good sources of various bioactive phytochemical compounds such as vitamins, anthocyanins, and carotenoids, whereby all of which are noted for multiple potential health benefits. However, knowledge regarding plum carotenoid profiles remains limited. Hence, the total and individual carotenoids in the edible parts (skin and flesh) of ten plum cultivars were determined using a spectrophotometer and high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection, respectively.

Sichuan is the China's leading producer of loquat, with the largest cultivation area and yield ranked first in China. Loquat is a seasonal fruit highly appreciated by consumers; however, the fruit is prone to browning and lignification after harvest, affecting its storage quality. The effects of L-Cysteine (L-Cys, 0.

Plums are widely consumed, contain high levels of phenolic compounds, and have strong antioxidant activity. In this study, the main Sichuan cultivars 'Qiangcuili' and 'Cuihongli' were used to study the changes in the appearance, internal quality, phenolic compounds, and antioxidant activities during fruit development and the expression of phenolic-compound-related structural genes. The results showed that, during development of the two plums, the total soluble solid and soluble sugar contents were highest at the mature stage.

MADS-box is a large transcription factor family in plants and plays a crucial role in various plant developmental processes; however, it has not been systematically analyzed in kiwifruit. In the present study, 74 AcMADS genes were identified in the Red5 kiwifruit genome, including 17 type-I and 57 type-II members according to the conserved domains. The AcMADS genes were randomly distributed across 25 chromosomes and were predicted to be mostly located in the nucleus.

Fruits provide abundant carotenoid nutrients for humans, whereas the understanding of the transcriptional regulatory mechanisms of carotenoids in fruits is still limited. Here, we identified a transcription factor AcMADS32 in kiwifruit, which was highly expressed in the fruit, correlated with carotenoid content and localized in the nucleus. The silencing expression of AcMADS32 significantly reduced the content of β-carotene and zeaxanthin and expression of β-carotene hydroxylase gene AcBCH1/2 in kiwifruit, while transient overexpression increased the accumulation of zeaxanthin, suggesting that AcMADS32 was an activator involved in the transcriptional regulation of carotenoid in fruit.

Loquats have gained increasing attention from consumers and growers for their essential nutrients and unusual phenology, which could help plug a gap period at market in early spring. Fruit acid is a critical contributor to fruit quality. The dynamic changes in organic acid (OA) during fruit development and ripening of common loquat (Dawuxing, DWX) and its interspecific hybrid (Chunhua, CH) were compared, as well as the corresponding enzyme activity and gene expression.

Loquats have drawn much attention due to their essential nutrients and unusual phenology, which fills a market gap in early spring. Fruit firmness (FF) is one of the most important quality attributes. Dynamic changes in FF, cell wall (CW) polysaccharides, CW hydrolase activity, and expression of CW metabolism-related genes during the fruit development and ripening stages of two contrasting loquat cultivars were compared.

Article Synopsis
  • Soil in many regions is deficient in selenium (Se), leading to low Se levels in crops; a study was conducted to see how different dilutions of a water extract affect Se accumulation in peach seedlings.
  • Higher concentrations of the water extract (300- and 400-fold dilutions) significantly improved growth metrics, such as biomass and enzyme activities, while all dilutions notably increased Se content in the roots and shoots of the seedlings compared to the control group.
  • The study found that specific enzyme activities, like those related to Se metabolism, correlated strongly with the total Se content in the shoots, indicating that using water extracts can enhance both growth and Se uptake in peach seedlings, warranting further research on the effects

The selenium (Se) deficiency is threatening the human health, and the increase of Se content in food can prevent the Se deficiency of human body. To increase the Se content in fruit trees and alleviate the Se stress to fruit trees, the effects of gibberellic acid (GA) on the growth and Se accumulation in under Se stress were studied. Although GA increased the biomass of , it did not significantly affect the root/shoot ratio.

Carotenoids are the pigment substances of yellow-fleshed kiwifruit, and among them β-cryptoxanthin has only been detected in the brighter yellow-fleshed variety 'Jinshi 1'. β-Carotene hydroxylase (BCH) catalyzes the formation of β-cryptoxanthin and zeaxanthin, but its molecular characteristics and functions have not been fully explained. Here we isolated two β-carotene hydroxylase genes, and from kiwifruit (), and their relative expression levels exhibited a close correlation with the content of β-cryptoxanthin.

The flavonoid metabolites were compared between red 'Summer Black' (SB) and white 'Shine Muscat' (SM) table grapes during fruit development based on widely targeted metabolome. A total of 134 flavonoids were identified in two cultivars, including 37 flavones, 33 flavonols, and 11 anthocyanidins, and so on. From young to veraison, the composition and the content of most flavonoids were decreasing in both cultivars but increased at maturation in SB.

The "Manicure Finger" grape is notable for its fingerlike berries with a bright red top and yellow base; however, the mechanism underlying this color difference remains unknown. This study showed that the anthocyanin concentration and the expression levels of anthocyanin-related genes in the top skin were notably higher than those in the basal skin. The expression levels of , , and were significantly correlated with the anthocyanin content.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination of orchard soils is a global problem that has been increasing. To decrease the Cd accumulation in fruits, intercropping the orchard crops with hyperaccumulator plants has been used for soil remediation. A pot and a field experiment were conducted to study the effects of intercropping the potential Cd-hyperaccumulator and its post-grafting generations with loquat () on the growth and Cd uptake of these two plant species.

In this study, we investigated the effects of melatonin application on berry coloration, sugar accumulation, and nutrient absorption in 'Summer Black' grapes. Melatonin spraying at 100 μmol L on grapes during veraison induced skin coloration earlier than that in controls, as well as higher transcript abundance of anthocyanin biosynthesis-related genes and transcription factors MYBA1 and MYBA2. Melatonin treatment increased the soluble sugar content, especially of sucrose, by promoting the activity of sucrose phosphate synthase, and also increased endogenous melatonin content and the concentrations of mineral nutrients N, K, Cu, Fe, and Zn in grape berries.

The whole-genome molecular mechanisms of melatonin (MT)-mediated enhancement of thermotolerance in plants has rarely been studied. In this study, the genome-wide gene expression profiles of kiwifruit seedlings primed with MT and non-MT at 45°C were analyzed by RNA-Seq. A total of 3299 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were screened between MT and non-MT treatment, in which carotenoid biosynthesis was one of the high-enrichment pathways revealed by Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis.
