Development of Open Backend Structures for Health Care Professionals to Improve Participation in App Developments: Pilot Usability Study of a Medical App.

Background: Efficient digitization in medicine still is in its infancy but undeniably has great potential for current and future challenges in health care. Thus far, the rollout of medical apps has not resulted in widespread use of smartphones in the German health care sector-the reasons for this have not been clarified so far. Nevertheless, the lack of user involvement in the development process and content creation might contribute to low acceptance of these products.

Supercapsular percutaneously assisted (SuperPath) approach in total hip arthroplasty : Surgical technique and preliminary results.

Objective: Portal assisted minimally invasive total hip arthroplasty without dislocation of the femoral head with preservation of the hip capsule and the external rotators in the lateral decubitus position for rapid recovery with the option of expandability to a mini posterior or classic posterolateral approach at any time.

Indications: Primary and secondary arthritis of the hip, femoral head necrosis, femoral neck fracture.

Contraindications: Severe anatomical disorders of the proximal femur, congenital high hip dysplasia, implanted hardware in the trochanteric region, local and systemic infections.

An Innovative Optical Sensor for the Online Monitoring and Control of Biomass Concentration in a Membrane Bioreactor System for Lactic Acid Production.

Accurate real-time process control is necessary to increase process efficiency, and optical sensors offer a competitive solution because they provide diverse system information in a noninvasive manner. We used an innovative scattered light sensor for the online monitoring of biomass during lactic acid production in a membrane bioreactor system because biomass determines productivity in this type of process. Identification of potent odorants in a novel nonalcoholic beverage produced by fermentation of wort with shiitake (Lentinula edodes).

Novel refreshments with pleasant flavors were developed by fermentation of wort with basidiomycetes. Among 31 screened fungi, shiitake (Lentinula edodes) produced the most pleasant flavor. It was perceived as fruity, slightly sour, and plum-like.

Organic acids and their derivatives are frequently used in beverage, food, and feed production. Acidic additives may act as buffers to regulate acidity, antioxidants, preservatives, flavor enhancers, and sequestrants. Beneficial effects on animal health and growth performance have been observed when using acidic substances as feed additives.

A prospective randomized peri- and post-operative comparison of the minimally invasive anterolateral approach versus the lateral approach.

There is still controversy as to whether minimally invasive total hip arthroplasty enhances the postoperative outcome. The aim of this study was to compare the outcome of patients who underwent total hip replacement through an anterolateral minimally invasive (MIS) or a conventional lateral approach (CON). We performed a randomized, prospective study of 75 patients with primary hip arthritis, who underwent hip replacement through the MIS (n=36) or CON (n=39) approach.

Practical application of different enzymes immobilized on sepabeads.

The immobilization of an endoglucanase, benzoylformate decarboxylase (BFD) from Pseudomonas putida, as well as of lipase B from Candida antarctica (CALB) onto the carrier supports Sepabeads EC-EP, Sepabeads EC-EA, and Sepabeads EC-BU was accomplished. It is shown that via these immobilized biocatalysts the synthesis of both fine and bulk chemicals is possible. This is illustrated by the syntheses of polyglycerol esters and (S)-hydroxy phenyl propanone.

Digital templating in total hip arthroplasty with the Mayo stem.

Patients: In 40 patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty with the Mayo femoral stem we studied how preoperative digital templating corresponded to the actual intraoperative choice of implant size, position, offset and restoration of leg length.

Results: The preoperatively planned sizes of the components showed a high rate of coincidence with the sizes used intraoperatively [Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) 0.661-0.

The role of [18F]fluoride positron emission tomography in the early detection of aseptic loosening of total knee arthroplasty.

Total knee arthroplasty is successful in the treatment of degenerative, arthritic or injured joints. But the most important long term complication seems to be aseptic loosening. An inflammatory process at the bone/cement or bone/prosthesis interface leads to a severe osteolysis.

Titanium serum levels may remain elevated despite hip revision surgery for wear-through of an acetabular component.

A 62-year-old female patient showed radiographic signs of severe linear wear of the acetabular component six years after cementless total hip arthroplasty. This suggested wear-through of the acetabular liner with secondary wear of the titanium shell. At revision surgery wear-through of both the inlay and the acetabular shell were confirmed.

[Spinal manipulative therapy and cervical artery dissections].

Severe complications after cervical spine manipulation are rare. As experts for medical treatment errors, we received between July 2002 and February 2004 cases with serious complications in the central nervous system after manipulation. 5 vertebral artery dissections with subsequent brain infarction were registered.

Very low platelet counts in post-transfusion purpura falsely diagnosed as heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. Report of four cases and review of literature.

Differential diagnosis between post-transfusion purpura (PTP) and heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) can be difficult in the initial stages of thrombocytopenia, as the early clinical presentations are often similar. Four patients are described who were suspected clinically of suffering from HIT. All four patients had recent blood transfusions and platelet alloantibodies, thus the diagnosis of PTP was made.

Megakaryocytopoiesis in bone marrow biopsies of patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). An immunohistochemical and morphometric evaluation with special emphasis on myelodysplastic features and precursor cells.

In 25 patients (22 males, 3 females--median age 39 years) with AIDS (CDC stages IV A-D) and no preceding myelotoxic therapy, morphometry and immunohistochemistry (CD 61-Y 2/51) was performed on trephine biopsies of the bone marrow to evaluate the megakaryocytic lineage. In comparison with megakaryocytes in the myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) significant differences were evident. In AIDS this cell population revealed a size distribution within the normal range (control group) and no predominance of micromegakaryocytes characteristic for MDS.

Dysmegakaryopoiesis in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS): an immunomorphometric study of bone marrow trephine biopsy specimens.

An immunohistochemical and morphometric analysis was performed on trephine biopsy specimens of the bone marrow in 40 patients (23 men and 17 women, mean age 62 years) with different subtypes of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) to determine dysmegakaryopoiesis, but particularly precursor cells--that is, pro- and megakaryoblasts. In 31 of the 40 patients the numbers of megakaryocytes were increased which was associated with a predominance of smaller cell forms (micromegakaryocytes). Compared with periodic acid Schiff, immunostaining with a formalin resistant monoclonal antibody against glycoprotein IIIa (Y2/51(CD61) showed a clinically important proportion of immature elements.
