The Care and Management of Children and Young People with Ataxia Telangiectasia Provided by Nurses and Allied Health Professionals: a Scoping Review.

Ataxia telangiectasia (A-T) is a rare, multisystem progressive condition that typically presents in early childhood. In the absence of cure, people with A-T require coordinated multidisciplinary care to manage their complex array of needs and to minimize the disease burden. Although symptom management has proven benefits for this population, including improved quality of life and reduced complications, there is a need for guidance specific to the nursing and allied healthcare teams who provide care within the community.

From Mandatory School Gymnastics to Physical Training for Youth. How the Became a "Gymnastic State" Dedicated to the Physical Preparation of Swiss Youth From 1873 to 1907.

The aim of this contribution is to analyse the special role that gymnastics clubs played, under the umbrella of the (SFG), in the formation of the Swiss nation and in the representation of a strong and united national youth at a time when the unity represented by the Swiss federal State founded in 1848 was strongly questioned by the conservative opposition. The purpose is mainly based on extensive statistical data gathered within the SFG about its members throughout the country at three particular moments (1873, 1895, and 1907) and on institutional archival funds. Our analysis is based on three successive points: after defining the relationship between the SFG and the Swiss Federal State (founded in 1848) for the unification and defense of the homeland, whether in terms of institutional mimicry or the building of a "national youth," a second part defines which type of "youth" is specifically targeted by the SFG and what it meant at the time to be a "young" or an "old" gymnast, in particular through the participation of the SFG in the National exhibition of Geneva in 1896.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have rapidly become the state-of-the-art models for image classification applications. They usually require large groundtruthed datasets for training. Here, we address object identification and recognition in the wild for infrared (IR) imaging in defense applications, where no such large-scale dataset is available.

The Rise of Massage and Medical Gymnastics in London and Paris before the First World War.

Massage and medical gymnastics experienced a rapid institutionalization across Europe and North America between 1850 and 1914. This article explores how this process took place in London and Paris. Physiotherapy developed many of the hallmarks of an independent discipline during this period, including an identified corpus of manipulations and exercises, some autonomous training courses and degrees for future practitioners, and even the creation of departments within several hospitals.

Efficacy of dexamethasone versus bevacizumab on regression of hard exudates in diabetic maculopathy: data from the BEVORDEX randomised clinical trial.

Objective: To report the effect of bevacizumab versus dexamethasone on hard exudates (HEX) in diabetic macular oedema (DME).

Design: Post hoc analysis of 24-month data from the Randomised clinical trial of BEVacizumab OR DEXamethasone for diabetic macular oedema (BEVORDEX) phase 2 multicentre randomised clinical trial. Eyes with centre-involving DME resistant to or unlikely to benefit from macular laser therapy were included.

Non-pharmaceutical management of respiratory morbidity in children with severe global developmental delay.

Background: Children with severe global developmental delay (SGDD) have significant intellectual disability and severe motor impairment; they are extremely limited in their functional movement and are dependent upon others for all activities of daily living. SGDD does not directly cause lung dysfunction, but the combination of immobility, weakness, skeletal deformity and parenchymal damage from aspiration can lead to significant prevalence of respiratory illness. Respiratory pathology is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality for children with SGDD; it can result in frequent hospital admissions and impacts upon quality of life.

[Comparison of medical practices of 'massage' and 'gymnastics' - at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century (England, France, Germany, Switzerland)].

Massage and medical gymnastics are very ancient form of medical practices and knowledge, nevertheless they seem to focus a growing attention between 1860 and World War I in Europe. These practices know a quick institutionalization, and the physiotherapy or "kinesitherapy" emerge as a discipline with some more structured training course for students and future practitioners. In fact, the determinants of this development are numerous, specialization, professionalization, cultural transfer, and more broadly with geopolitical influences and nationalist feelings, influence of the Swedish gymnastics.

A randomized clinical trial of intravitreal bevacizumab versus intravitreal dexamethasone for diabetic macular edema: the BEVORDEX study.

Background: Diabetic macular oedema (DMO) is the commonest cause of vision loss in people with diabetes. Laser photocoagulation can be effective in the treatment of DMO; however, its mechanism of action is still poorly understood. A better understanding of these mechanisms may allow the development of therapeutic approaches that could avoid the deleterious adverse events associated with photocoagulation.

This article establishes the biography of a little known physician of the 19th century., whose commitment with orthopaedics and formulation of medical gymnastics was important: the surgeon-orthopaedist Sauveur-Henri-Victor Bouvier. Several constitutive processes of the medical field of the 19th century are analysed: specialization (around orthopaedics), professionalization and development of various therapeutic and hygienic methods (among them medical gymnastics).

Patient satisfaction following emergency admission via a surgical assessment unit and an emergency department.

Aim: Acute surgical patients are admitted to our regional hospital through the emergency department (ED) and through a new surgical assessment unit (SAU). The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of the two units in seeing and assessing acute surgical patients, as well as patients' satisfaction with their experiences in both units.

Methods: A patient satisfaction scoring questionnaire was distributed to 115 consecutive surgical patients attending the SAU and ED over an 8-week period.

Central serous chorioretinopathy: a review of epidemiology and pathophysiology.

Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) is a common retinal cause of vision loss. This review surveys the epidemiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, natural history and pathophysiology of CSCR. Studies suggest an annual incidence rate of 10 per 100 000 in men, with CSCR occurring six times more commonly in men compared with women.

Diagnosis and interventions for central serous chorioretinopathy: review and update.

Most acute cases of central serous chorioretinopathy resolve spontaneously with minimal visual impairment. The small percentage of eyes developing chronic or recurrent disease that do warrant treatment is often difficult to control. Emergent investigations and treatments have added to the established options available to manage these cases.

In this contribution, we try to outline a history of the rise of orthopaedic and gymnastic clinics from 1820 to 1860 in France, and particularly in Paris. These clinics are located at the crossroads of several social processes of the 19th century: the structuring of a medical field (observed through specialization, professionalization, etc.), physical exercises legitimating process or the development of a medical interest for the female body.

Proteome map of normal rat retina and comparison with the proteome of diabetic rat retina: new insight in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy.

We have employed proteomics to establish a proteome map of the normal rat retina. This baseline map was then used for comparison with the early diabetic rat retinal proteome. Diabetic rat retinae were obtained from Dark Agouti rats after 10 wk of streptozotocin-induced hyperglycaemia.

Proximal tibiofibular dislocation.

Proximal tibiofibular joint dislocation is an uncommon injury, which may be easily missed on plain radiography. If recognised, it can be treated in the emergency department, avoiding surgery and long term problems. The case is presented of a 22 year old male rugby player who was tackled from the left hand side while turning to the left.

Accident and emergency department access to the child protection register: a questionnaire survey.

Objectives: To ascertain how UK accident and emergency (A&E) departments access the child protection register, their levels of satisfaction with that access and their criteria for checking the register.

Methods: A postal questionnaire was sent to 254 "major" A&E departments listed in the 1996 British Association for Accident and Emergency Medicine directory.

Results: 190 questionnaires were returned (response rate 75%).
