Purpose: Exosomes play a key role in cell-to-cell communication by transferring their cargo to target tissues. Little is known on the course of exosome size and number in infants and children.
Methods: Longitudinally, we assessed the size and number of circulating exosomes at birth and at ages 2 and 7 yr in 75 infants/children born appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA; n=40) or small-for-gestational-age (SGA; n=35 with spontaneous catch-up), and related those results to concomitantly assessed measures of endocrine-metabolic health (HOMA-IR; IGF-1), body composition (by DXA at ages 0 and 2) and abdominal fat partitioning (subcutaneous, visceral and hepatic fat by MRI at age 7).
This study investigates the acquisition of anaphora resolution (AR) in Spanish as a second language (L2). According to the Position of Antecedent Strategy (PAS), in native Spanish null pronominal subjects are biased toward subject antecedents, whereas overt pronominal subjects show a "flexible" bias (typically toward non-subject but also toward subject antecedents). The PAS has been extensively investigated in experimental studies, though little is known about real production.

Despite being subjected to trade regulations that require various sterilization/fumigation protocols, our study demonstrates high survival and diversity of fungi in wood products originating from at least seven countries on three continents. Among these fungi were nonendemic plant and human pathogens, as well as mycotoxin producers.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFA primary goal of evolutionary genetics is to discover and explain the genetic basis of fitness-related traits and how this genetic basis evolves within natural populations. Unprecedented technological advances have fueled the discovery of genetic variants associated with ecologically relevant phenotypes in many different life forms, as well as the ability to scan genomes for deviations from selectively neutral models of evolution. Theoretically, the degree of overlap between lists of genomic regions identified using each approach is related to the genetic architecture of fitness-related traits and the strength and type of natural selection molding variation at these traits within natural populations.

Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were given entacapone (a catechol-O-methyltransferase inhibitor) by gavage from the 10th to the 20th day of pregnancy. Blood pressure was measured by plethysmography in the tail artery.

Objective: The present study evaluated whether the treatment with the superoxide anion dismutase mimetic tempol prevents the worsening in hypertension and in myocardial vascular remodeling induced by ovariectomy in female spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR).
Methods: Experiments were performed in ten week old female SHRs randomly assigned to the groups: intact (INT: given vehicle; INT+T: treated with tempol, 90 mg/kg/day), ovariectomized (OVX: vehicle and OVX+T: tempol, respectively) and ovariectomized treated with 17β-estradiol (OVX+E2 and OVX+E2+T). Evolution of systolic blood pressure (SBP) was determined every other week in lightly restrained awake rats using a noninvasive computerized tail-cuff plethysmography system.
Genetic resistance to disease incited by necrotrophic pathogens is not well understood in plants. Whereas resistance is often quantitative, there is limited information on the genes that underpin quantitative variation in disease resistance. We used a population genomic approach to identify genes in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) that are associated with resistance to pitch canker, a disease incited by the necrotrophic pathogen Fusarium circinatum.

The present study evaluated the acute in vitro effects of the active metabolite 2-methoxyestradiol on endothelial NO release from ovariectomized female and intact male and female rat aortas. NO was measured electrochemically by differential normal pulse amperometry using carbon fiber microsensors, and also by fluorescence microscopy using 4,5-diaminofluorescein diacetate.

We investigated the effect of 2-methoxyestradiol (an active metabolite of estradiol with non-feminizing activity) on the development of hypertension and myocardial vascular remodeling in male and female ovarectomized SHR.
Methods: Rats were divided into five groups: intact females, ovarectomized (OVX), OVX+ 2-methoxyestradiol (2ME), control males, and male+2ME.
Sequencing of the Populus trichocarpa genome creates an opportunity to describe the transcriptome of a woody perennial species and establish an atlas of gene expression. A comparison with the transcriptomes of other species can also define genes that are conserved or diverging in plant species. Here, the transcriptome in vegetative organs of the P.

This planthopper produces severe damages as a phloem feeder, causes mechanical injury during oviposition and vectors the rice hoja blanca virus (RHBV). The main objective of this study was to determine the genetic diversity of T.

These YLS are obligate symbiotes, which are transmitted transovarially, and maintain a mutualistic relationship with the insect host. This characteristic has made in vitro culture and classification of YLS rather difficult using conventional methods.

Design: Ten-week-old female spontaneously hypertensive rats were ovariectomized (OVX) and randomly assigned to the groups: untreated OVX and treated with 17beta-estradiol (estradiol, 1.5 mg) and/or captopril (5 mg/kg/day).
The objective of this study was to investigate whether the acute haemodynamic effects of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition with captopril could be enhanced by oestrogen administration, and then to evaluate the mechanisms involved in this enhancement. All experiments were performed in 18-week-old female spontaneously hypertensive rats arranged in three experimental groups: intact; ovariectomized (OVX); and ovariectomized plus treatment with 17beta-oestradiol (OVX + E2). These groups were used to evaluate the effects of captopril administration alone, or following bradykinin B2 receptor blockade or nitric oxide synthase inhibition, on a number of haemodynamic parameters (mean arterial pressure, cardiac index, vascular resistance and heart rate).
