Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a powerful tool for observing and assessing the properties of brain tissue and structures. In particular, in the context of neonatal care, MR images can be used to analyze neurodevelopmental problems that may arise in premature newborns. However, the intrinsic properties of newborn MR images, combined with the high variability of MR acquisition in a clinical setting, result in complex and heterogeneous images.

Background: The assessment of acute heart failure (AHF) prognosis is primordial in emergency setting. Although AHF management is exhaustively codified using mortality predictors, there is currently no recommended scoring system for assessing prognosis. The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) recommends a comprehensive assessment of global AHF prognosis, considering in-hospital mortality, early rehospitalization rates and the length of hospital stay.

Background: In 2018, the French "Yellow Vest" social protest movement spread with weekly demonstrations resulting in confrontations between protesters and law enforcement. Non-lethal weapons, such as defensive bullet launchers (DBL) were used, and significant injuries have been reported through media, leading to public controversy regarding their use. These injuries are not well-known to civilian emergency physicians.

Article Synopsis
  • Clinical guidelines for managing acute heart failure in emergency departments have low adherence due to moderate evidence, prompting a trial of a recommended care bundle.
  • The study involved 503 patients aged 75 and older at 15 EDs in France, testing a bundle including intravenous nitrates and management of underlying conditions against standard care.
  • Results showed that patients receiving the intervention had significantly more intravenous nitrates and potentially better outcomes in terms of days alive and out of the hospital compared to the control group.

Objective: The Bacterial Meningitis Score (BMS) is recommended by pediatric academic societies to rule out the diagnosis of bacterial meningitis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the BMS to identify adults at no risk for bacterial meningitis.

Methods: We conducted a multicentric retrospective study including adults who consulted the emergency department (ED) for meningitis [cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) white blood cells ≥5/mm with a ratio of white blood cells/red blood cells <1:900) during a 4-year period.

Article Synopsis
  • The study addresses the challenge of low anisotropic resolution in neonatal brain MRI analysis by proposing a method that combines high-resolution reconstruction and image segmentation simultaneously using generative adversarial networks.
  • The paper details the architecture and implementation of the network, with additional resources available on GitHub, and demonstrates its effectiveness in analyzing cortical structures from neonatal MR images.
  • The results show strong performance metrics and usability for medical applications, with the software being freely available for anyone to use on their own MR image datasets.
