Cultivated meat production offers solutions in addressing global food security and sustainability challenges. However, serum-free media (SFM) used in cultivating the cells are expensive, contributing to at least 50% of variable operating costs. This review explores technologies for cost-effective SFM, focusing on reducing cost from using growth factors and recombinant proteins, using affordable raw materials for basal media, and implementing cost-saving measures like media recycling and reducing waste build-up.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of prophylactic antibiotics in patients with alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH) undergoing steroid treatment, focusing on their impact on survival and various complications.
  • A systematic review of six studies involving 510 patients found that prophylactic antibiotics reduced the risk of infections and hepatic encephalopathy (HE) but did not significantly improve 90-day survival rates or prevent acute kidney injury (AKI).
  • The findings suggest that while prophylactic antibiotics can reduce certain risks, more extensive research is needed as the sample size required to establish a survival benefit is much larger than the studies reviewed.

Background: Pregnant women with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection represent a special population in which treatment access remains limited despite its increasing prevalence. A reliable estimate of the burden and clinical outcomes of pregnant women with HCV infection is crucial for HCV elimination. We aimed to determine the prevalence, maternal-to-child transmission (MTCT), maternal and fetal complication rates, and direct acting antivirals (DAA) treatment outcomes of chronic HCV infection in pregnant women.

Introduction: Radiology plays an integral role in fracture detection in the emergency department (ED). After hours, when there are fewer reporting radiologists, most radiographs are interpreted by ED physicians. A minority of these interpretations may miss diagnoses, which later require the callback of patients for further management.

Bone regeneration involves multiple factors such as tissue interactions, an inflammatory response, and vessel formation. In the event of diseases, old age, lifestyle, or trauma, bone regeneration can be impaired which could result in a prolonged healing duration or requiring an external intervention for repair. Currently, bone grafts hold the golden standard for bone regeneration.

The management and reconstruction of critical-sized segmental bone defects remain a major clinical challenge for orthopaedic clinicians and surgeons. In particular, regenerative medicine approaches that involve incorporating stem cells within tissue engineering scaffolds have great promise for fracture management. This narrative review focuses on the primary components of bone tissue engineering-stem cells, scaffolds, the microenvironment, and vascularisation-addressing current advances and translational and regulatory challenges in the current landscape of stem cell therapy for critical-sized bone defects.

Background: The prevalence of persons with complex needs in Singapore is rising. Poor understanding of what constitutes complexity impedes the identification of care gaps and development of interventions to improve care for these individuals. We aim to identify the characteristics contributing to complexity in primary care, from the Family Physicians' (FP) perspectives.

Background: Psychological distress post lumbar spine surgery is associated with poorer outcomes. There is a scarcity of studies devoted to analyzing the risk factors associated with psychological distress in patients who have undergone lumbar fusion surgery. The purpose of this study was to (1) describe the time course and severity of psychological distress using the STarT Back Tool (SBT) and (2) determine the demographic and clinical predictors of SBT score post lumbar spine fusion surgery.

Background: Stress, anxiety, and depression are major mental health concerns worldwide. A wide variety of digital mental health interventions have demonstrated efficacy in improving one's mental health status, and digital interventions that involve some form of human involvement have been shown to demonstrate greater efficacy than self-guided digital interventions. Studies demonstrating the efficacy of digital mental health interventions within the Asian region are scarce.

Introduction: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the leading cause of chronic liver disease, with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) as a major predictor. Insulin resistance and chronic inflammation are key pathways in the pathogenesis of T2DM leading to NAFLD and vice versa, with the synergistic effect of NAFLD and T2DM increasing morbidity and mortality risks. This meta-analysis aims to quantify the prevalence of NAFLD and the prevalence of clinically significant and advanced fibrosis in people with T2DM.

Introduction: To achieve early detection and curative treatment options, surveillance imaging for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) must remain of quality and without substantial limitations in liver visualization. However, the prevalence of limited liver visualization during HCC surveillance imaging has not been systematically assessed. Utilizing a systematic review and meta-analytic approach, we aimed to determine the prevalence of limited liver visualization during HCC surveillance imaging.

Global estimates of prevalence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019 were examined for metabolic diseases (type 2 diabetes mellitus [T2DM], hypertension, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease [NAFLD]). For metabolic risk factors (hyperlipidemia and obesity), estimates were limited to mortality and DALYs. From 2000 to 2019, prevalence rates increased for all metabolic diseases, with the greatest increase in high socio-demographic index (SDI) countries.

Introduction: A high incidence of mortality and severe COVID-19 infection was reported in hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients during the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic; however, outcomes with subsequent severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants, such as the omicron variant, have yet to be reported. Additionally, rollout of COVID-19 vaccinations in subsequent pandemic waves may modify COVID-19 disease severity and mortality in this immunocompromised population. We describe COVID-19 outcomes among a highly vaccinated population of HSCT recipients at a single center during successive waves of community transmission arising from the SARS-CoV-2 delta and omicron variants.

Good syndrome (GS) is a rare acquired immunodeficiency disease characterized by the presence of thymoma with combined B and T cell immunodeficiency in adults. Recurrent bacterial infections, particularly sinopulmonary infections caused by encapsulated bacteria, remain the most common infective presentation of GS; however, relapsing viral infections have also been reported, likely due to impaired T cell-mediated immunity. Relapsing COVID-19 infection, however, has not been previously reported as a manifestation of GS.
