Background: Nationwide databases show that iatrogenic stroke and postoperative hematoma are among the commonest complications in brain tumor surgery, with a 10-year incidence of 16.3/1000 and 10.3/1000, respectively.

Carbapenem resistance among Gram-negative isolates collected from patients in ICU and non-ICU hospital wards in Hong Kong: SMART 2017-2020.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to estimate carbapenem resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterobacterales isolated from infected patients in intensive care unit (ICU) and non-ICU hospital wards in Hong Kong.

Methods: Isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ICU, n = 35; non-ICU, n = 264) and Enterobacterales (ICU, n = 129; non-ICU, n = 1390) were collected in four Hong Kong hospitals in 2017-2020. Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute broth microdilution minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were interpreted according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute 2021 M100 breakpoints.

Practical, Stereotactic, Low-Profile Technique for Transcortical/Transventricular Colloid Cyst Removal Independent of Ventricular Size: Technical Note and Analysis of Approaches.

Background: In the presence of a dilated foramen of Monro, a transcortical, transforaminal approach is considered the safest and simplest approach for resection of colloid cysts. However, in the presence of small or normal frontal horns, numerous microsurgical approaches and, often complicated, variations have been described, invariably employing forms of stereotactic navigation.

Objective: To report an alternative, accurate, microsurgical stereotactic low-profile technique.

Recurrence is a major complication of some meningiomas. Although there were many studies on biomarkers associated with higher grades or increased aggressiveness, few studies specifically examined longitudinal samples of primary meningiomas and recurrences from the same patients for molecular life history. We studied 99 primary and recurrent meningiomas from 42 patients by FISH for 22q, 1q, 1p, 3p, 5q, 6q, 10p, 10q, 14q, 18q, CDKN2A/B homozygous deletion, ALT (Alternative Lengthening of Telomere), TERT re-arrangement, targeted sequencing and TERTp sequencing.

The origins of sex-biased differences in disease and health are of growing interest to both medical researchers and health professionals. Several major factors have been identified that affect sex differences in incidence of diseases and mental disorders. These are: sex chromosomes, sex hormones and female immunity, sexual selection and antagonistic evolution, and differential susceptibility of sexes to environmental factors.

Activity of ceftolozane/tazobactam against Gram-negative isolates among different infections in Hong Kong: SMART 2017-2019.

Ceftolozane/tazobactam was approved by the Drug Office, Department of Health, Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2017. Currently the activity of ceftolozane/tazobactam against Gram-negative pathogens isolated from patients in Hong Kong is undocumented. It would be prudent to document the activity of ceftolozane/tazobactam against and Enterobacterales isolated from hospitalized patients in Hong Kong.

Leptin and Its Signaling Are Not Involved in Zebrafish Puberty Onset.

Leptin is a peptide hormone secreted from the adipose tissues and its signaling plays a central role in metabolic regulation of growth, especially on fat mass. In addition, leptin is also involved in regulating reproduction in mammals. In teleosts, there are two leptin ligands (lepa and lepb) and one cognate leptin receptor (lepr); however, their functions are still elusive.

The impact and cost-effectiveness of 9-valent human papillomavirus vaccine in adolescent females in Hong Kong.

Introduction: In Hong Kong (HK), a single-cohort vaccination program for 10-12-year-old girls with the 9-valent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine (9vHPV; types 6/11/16/18/31/33/45/52/58) has been launched. This study assessed the public health impact and cost-effectiveness of implementing routine 9vHPV vaccination (12-year-olds) with or without catch-up 9vHPV vaccination (13-18-year-olds) in HK.

Methods: The health impact and costs of implementing routine 9vHPV vaccination with or without catch-up vaccination over a 100-year time horizon were evaluated using a validated HPV-type transmission dynamic model adapted to the HK population; analyses were performed from a healthcare payer perspective.

Molecular landscape of IDH-mutant primary astrocytoma Grade IV/glioblastomas.

Clinical and mutational profiles of adult medulloblastoma groups.

Adult medulloblastomas are clinically and molecularly understudied due to their rarity. To investigate the effects of the Dejian mind-body intervention (DMBI), on depressive symptoms and electroencephalography (EEG) changes in relation to emotional processing in patients with depression. Seventy-five age-, gender-, and education-matched participants with depression were randomly assigned to receive either Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) or DMBI or were placed in a control group. Overall depressive syndrome, specific mood-related symptoms (Hamilton Psychiatric Rating Scale for Depression, Beck Depression Inventory), and EEG data were collected individually during a resting state and during affective image viewing before and after 10 weeks of intervention.

This review describes the effects of such treatment on antimullerian hormone (AMH) and the implications of the fall in AMH in relation to ovarian function and fertility, especially in the era of improved fertility preservation strategies.

Roles of Figla/figla in Juvenile Ovary Development and Follicle Formation During Zebrafish Gonadogenesis.

Sex determination and differentiation are complex processes. As a juvenile hermaphrodite or undifferentiated gonochorist, zebrafish undergo a special juvenile ovarian phase during sex differentiation, making it an excellent model for studying early oogenesis and folliculogenesis. We provide lines of evidence at morphological, molecular, and genetic levels for roles of factor in the germline α (Figla), an oocyte-specific transcription factor, in early zebrafish gonadogenesis.

The effect of 12-month dehydroepiandrosterone supplementation on the menstrual pattern, ovarian reserve markers, and safety profile in women with premature ovarian insufficiency.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of 12-month DHEA supplementation on menstrual pattern and ovarian reserve markers in women with premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) METHODS: This is a prospective observational study. Women with POI were given DHEA supplements (25 mg three times daily) for 12 months. Sonographic assessment for ovarian volume and antral follicle count (AFC) and serum measurement for anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol, testosterone, liver function, and hemoglobin level were performed at baseline and monthly for 13 months after the supplementation.

Identification and characterization of a specific 13-miRNA expression signature during follicle activation in the zebrafish ovary.

Ovarian folliculogenesis is always of great interest in reproductive biology. However, the molecular mechanisms that control follicle development, particularly the early phase of follicle activation or recruitment, still remain poorly understood. The presence of multiple variants for many mRNAs is a major contributor to protein diversity. The processing of these variants is tightly controlled in a cell-type specific manner and has a significant impact on gene expression control. Here we investigate the differential translation rates of individual mRNA variants in embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and in ESC derived Neural Precursor Cells (NPCs) using polysome profiling coupled to RNA sequencing.

Emotional memory in pregnant women at risk for postpartum depression.

A randomized controlled neurophysiological study of a chinese chan-based mind-body intervention in patients with major depressive disorder.

Our previous studies have reported the therapeutic effects of 10-session Chinese Chan-based Dejian mind-body interventions (DMBI) in reducing the intake of antidepressants, improving depressive symptoms, and enhancing the attentional abilities of patients with depression. This study aims to explore the possible neuroelectrophysiological mechanisms underlying the previously reported treatment effects of DMBI in comparison with those of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). RPL39L is an example of a recently evolved ribosomal protein paralog that shows highly specific tissue expression patterns and is upregulated in ESCs and HCC tumors.

Ribosomal proteins (RPs) have been shown to be able to impart selectivity on the translating ribosome implicating them in gene expression control. Many ribosomal proteins are highly conserved and recently a number of ribosomal protein paralogs have been described in mammals. We examined the expression pattern of RPs in differentiating mouse Embryonic Stem Cells (ESCs), paying particular attention to the RP paralogs.
