Factors affecting infant toy preferences: Age, gender, experience, motor development, and parental attitude.

In contrast to the anecdotal claim that "male infants like cars and female infants like dolls," previous studies have reported mixed findings for gender-related toy preferences in infancy. In Experiment 1, we explored the emergence of gender-related preferences using face-car pairs (Experiment 1a, n = 51, 6-20 months) or face-stove pairs (Experiment 1b, n = 54, 6-20 months). In Experiment 2 (n = 42, 14-16 months), we explore the effect of toy properties, infants' past toy exposure, activity levels, and parental attitudes on such preferences using a wider range of toys.

[Status of alternative medicine in Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis patents: a questionnaire survey].

Background: Patients with M. Crohn or colitis ulcerosa live with a chronic disease. Pharmaceuticals used in convention-al medicine have been proven to be effective but can have strong side-effects.

Prospective comparison of contrast enhanced CT colonography and conventional colonoscopy for detection of colorectal neoplasms in a single institutional study using second-look colonoscopy with discrepant results.

Background: Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer in Western countries. Early detection by colorectal cancer screening can effectively cut its mortality rate. CT colonography represents a promising, minimally invasive alternative to conventional methods of colorectal carcinoma screening.

Virtual colon dissection with CT colonography compared with axial interpretation and conventional colonoscopy: preliminary results.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine whether a new virtual colon dissection 3D visualization technique for CT colonography has a shorter analysis time and better sensitivity for detection of colonic polyps than interpretation of axial CT images. SUBJECTS AND METHODS. CT colonography was performed in 22 patients using 4-MDCT followed by conventional colonoscopy on the same day.

Complementary alternative medicine in patients with inflammatory bowel disease: use and attitudes.

Background: A widespread increase in the use of complementary alternative medicine (CAM) by patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been recognized. The aim of our study was to evaluate both the extent and the determinants of CAM use by outpatients with IBD.

Methods: Outpatients of the IBD centre at the University Hospital of Berne and patients of two gastroenterology private practices in Olten (Switzerland) completed a mailed self-administrated questionnaire regarding alternative medicine.

Reduced activity of 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase in patients with cholestasis.

Enhanced renal sodium retention and potassium loss in patients with cirrhosis is due to activation of mineralocorticoid receptors (MRs). Increased aldosterone concentrations, however, do not entirely explain the activation of MR in cirrhosis. Here, we hypothesize that cortisol activates MRs in patients with cholestasis.

Treatment of hepatic hydrothorax and reduction of chest tube output with octreotide.

Hepatic hydrothorax is a dreaded complication in patients with liver cirrhosis. Placement of chest tubes can alleviate respiratory distress, but patients often succumb due to excessive fluid and protein loss via the open drain. Our case illustrates that high-dose octreotide can strongly reduce hepatic hydrothorax drainage volume.

Cholangiopathy after short-term administration of piperacillin and imipenem/cilastatin.

We describe a patient who suffered from intestinal perforation after abdominal trauma. Perioperatively, he was treated with a single dose of piperacillin and 9 doses of imipenem/cilastatin over 3 days. The patient was discharged 5 days after surgery in good clinical condition and with normal liver values except for a marginal elevation of alanine aminotransferase.

[Therapeutic use of N-acetylcysteine in acute lung diseases].

Oxidants play a key role in disease processes, particularly in the detrimental mechanisms leading to tissue damage in certain forms of acute lung injury. A number of mediators contribute to the pathologic response in ARDS, SIRS or hyperoxia-induced pulmonary damage. One of the most important detrimental factors is the generation and activation of highly reactive oxygen species which are leading factors implicated in the process of tissue damage.

Angiotropic (intravascular) large cell lymphoma: case report and short discussion of the literature.

We report a case of angiotropic (intravascular) large B-cell lymphoma in an 84-year-old woman who underwent diagnostic procedures for progressive, painful induration of the legs. Physical examination and imaging studies revealed only widespread telangiectasias and significant panniculities-like lymphedema of the legs, with no masses or lymphadenopathies. The patient achieved a complete clinical remission after the first three cycles of polychemotherapy.
