Is preoperative physical function testing predictive of length of stay in patients with colorectal cancer? A retrospective study.

Surgery is the primary treatment for colorectal cancer. A prolonged Length of Stay (pLOS) can increase risk of complications and physical inactivity, leading to a decline in physical function. While promising results were seen from preoperative exercise training and post-operative functional recovery, the predictive potential of preoperative physical function has not yet been investigated.

Facile tuning of tip sharpness on gold nanostars by the controlled seed-growth method and coating with a silver shell for detection of thiram using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS).

Developing SERS substrates based on individual gold and silver metals, either with rough surfaces or bare nanoparticles, has certain limitations in practical analysis applications. In order to improve the range of applications of the noble metallic substrates, a comprehensive approach has been proposed for preparing non-traditional SERS nano-substrates by combining tip-enhanced gold nanostars and Raman signal amplification of the silver layer. This preparation process is conducted in two steps, including tuning the sharpness and length of tips by a modified seed growth method followed by coating the silver layer on the formed star-shaped nanoparticles.

Breast arterial calcifications on mammography: a new marker of cardiovascular risk in asymptomatic middle age women?

Objectives: To determine whether breast arterial calcification (BAC) detected on mammography can predict the presence of coronary artery calcification (CAC) on CT in women.

Methods: Women explored with both mammography and thoracic CT from 2009 to 2018 were retrospectively included. Women were separated in 3 categories (no BAC, few BAC, and marked BAC) using a specific 12-point scale.

Prehabilitation in Thoracic Cancer Surgery: From Research to Standard of Care.

Objective: To determine whether personalized, stepped prehabilitation care is a feasible, safe, and effective implementation strategy.

Design: Quality improvement project. Data collected prospectively from August 2018 to December 2019 were analyzed retrospectively to describe the clinical implementation of a prehabilitation care program for elective lung cancer surgery.

Deubiquitylases (DUBs) regulate critical signaling pathways at the intersection of host immunity and viral pathogenesis. Although RIG-I activation is heavily dependent on ubiquitylation, systematic analyses of DUBs that regulate this pathway have not been performed. Using a ubiquitin C-terminal electrophile, we profile DUBs that function during influenza A virus (IAV) infection and isolate OTUB1 as a key regulator of RIG-I-dependent antiviral responses.

Cladophialophora bantiana and Candida albicans mixed infection in cerebral abscess of an HIV-negative patient.

Cladophialophora bantiana is a black fungus recorded rarely as a cause of brain abscess. We describe the first case seen in Vietnam. A 35-year-old, previously healthy male, HIV negative, came to the hospital with a clinical diagnosis of brain tumor.

Air-stable PbSe/PbS and PbSe/PbSexS1-x core-shell nanocrystal quantum dots and their applications.

The optical properties and functionality of air-stable PbSe/PbS core-shell and PbSe/PbSexS1-x core-alloyed shell nanocrystal quantum dots (NQDs) are presented. These NQDs showed chemical robustness over months and years and band-gap tunability in the near infrared spectral regime, with a reliance on the NQD size and composition. Furthermore, these NQDs exhibit high emission quantum efficiencies of up to 65% and an exciton emission band that is narrower than that of the corresponding PbSe NQDs.
