Neurofilament light chain (NFL) level in biofluids is a sensitive measure of axonal damage and a promising biomarker in neurodegenerative diseases. In Parkinson's disease (PD), NFL can distinguish PD from other parkinsonian disorders, and NFL concentration is associated with disease severity, risk of progression, and survival. To determine whether serum NFL at baseline in de novo PD predicts motor decline, differentially impacts specific motor features, predicts cognitive decline, and predicts loss of dopamine terminals, here we evaluated 376 de novo PD patients from the PPMI database and analyzed the effect of baseline serum NFL levels on progression over eight years of motor impairment measured with the UPDRS, cognitive function measured with the MoCA, and putamen dopamine transporter (DAT) binding ratio measured with DaTscan.

To understand the potential effects of cancer cells on surrounding normal mammary epithelial cells, we performed direct co-culture of non-tumorigenic mammary epithelial MCF10A cells and various breast cancer cells. Firstly, we observed dynamic cell-cell interactions between the MCF10A cells and breast cancer cells including lamellipodia or nanotube-like contacts and transfer of extracellular vesicles. Co-cultured MCF10A cells exhibited features of epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and showed increased capacity of cell proliferation, migration, colony formation, and 3-dimensional sphere formation.

In order to make good use of exocarps as agricultural residues, the present work was conducted aiming to evaluate the main bioactive compounds and biological activities of different solvent (petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, -hexane, acetone, ethanol, and methanol) exocarp extracts. The methanol extracts with the highest content of total phenolics and total flavonoids showed the strongest antioxidant and antibacterial activities. -Hexane extracts had the lowest total phenolics, flavonoids and antioxidant activities, however, it exhibited moderately high antibacterial activities compared to other extracts.

Buried salt bridges widely exist in protein structures but are rarely used in synthetic systems for molecular recognition in water. By mimicking the binding pocket of bioreceptors, we designed and synthesized a pair of endo-functionalized macrocyclic hosts with secondary ammonium groups in a hydrophobic cavity. We found that these macrocycles are able to selectively recognize carboxylic acids in water through salt bridges and the hydrophobic effect.
